Or am I klever 
Regarding my 12 speed road bike
when on the smaller rear cogs,the chain did the old rub
the front derailer routine,
as my shifters are the brake lever type
i couldnt just move the selector a tad as on the older style untill all goes quiet
so i slackened the fixing bolt,moved said derailer about an 8th of an inch away from the chain,
all gears are now without any grind on front large small sprocket as well.
Was I lucky,
or am I kidding myself?

Without knowing if it was wrong in the first place, I can't say whether it was luck, or a correction of a problem. In any case if you were working blind or just guessing, we can chalk it up to luck. That's not such a bad thing, because in the end you got what you needed, a working shifter.

Iv'e had several road bikes of old style
but not like this one,
it is the same weight as my mountain bike rear wheel .....
well not far off,
and very nice to ride,
it was as i say,the lack of tweakability,
you get with the lever change type what threw me.
