Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Alternatives to Under Saddle Bag

I have always used a medium-size under-saddle bag beneath my seat to carry a few essentials when I ride. I "think" it's pretty minimalist. I just put the following in the bag: spare tire, two tire irons, small tool for bike fixes (a few hex wrenches), patch kit. I usually throw my cell phone and wallet in it too.

I recently bought a new bicycling bib, and the velcro from the bag (around the seat post) did some damage to the new bib.

I have been told by the store that I bought it from -- and several others as well -- to do away with the under-saddle bag altogether. People say they just throw that stuff in their jersey pockets.

I'd love to hear what people do for this. I "could" put all that in my jersey pocket, but I'd prefer a bag. I hate the weight pulling down on my shirt.

Is that what people do? Or has anyone found an under-saddle solution that does not have the velcro strap around the seat post? Nashbar has some that seem to fit that bill, but I read reviews of them breaking off and people losing their bag.

I welcome any suggestions or solutions.

Thanks,
Tesgin

Cut off the velcro strap that goes around the seatpost. Most small saddle bags will secure just fine with just the strap around the seat rails snugged down.

An alternative to the seat bag is tools in a waterbottle, but you give up one water bottle.

A frame bag could be another option.

Awesome straps work really well. I've used them to carry extra stuff before on really long unsupported rides.

I relocated the saddle bag to the front triangle behind the head tube on one bike.

Banjo Brothers Mini seat bag tucks out of the way and has no seat post Velcro.

Under saddle bag with tubes is the most practical. Already there, no need to remember. Put food/phone in your pocket.

I can't find this for the life of me, everywhere I look they have the new one. Do you know someone that still sells the old one like this?

A couple of times, I've taken for granted that I have everything I need in my bag only to discover that I gave my tube/CO2/whatever to someone else on a previous ride. As that's the case, I carry everything in a small Ziploc in a jersey pocket. Impossible to forget that way and forces me to check each time that I've got what I need. The Ziploc goes into my shoes post ride so i don't forget it.

Arundel dual is the way to go!

Another option, take a short strip of black electrical tape (assuming the strap is black) and put it on the velcro strap around the seat post. Easy to remove the bag if you need to, the velcro won't catch on your bibs anymore, and it's quick and easy to replace if the tape wears out.

+1 3 small sandwich ziploc bags, one for spares/tools, one for the gels/cc/keys/money, one for the iphone if it's wet.
One each in the jersey pocket

I carry everything in a jersey pocket. This was partly because I had a weird set up with very little seat post to mount stuff and I preferred to put a blinkie taillight on the one inch of post I had to work with.

Now I prefer to train this way, even though my bike now has a lot of post for a bag or whatever. I've since added a clicker 4mm torque wrench thing for the stem/bars.

https://sprinterdellacasa.blogspot.co...ning-ride.html

The third box (with a second tube) is for longer rides only.

I recently picked up the Timbuk2 Goody Box which straps to your head tube and top tube, and I'm liking it so far. It's got a goodly amount of space in it for tools/spares/personal effects, and depending on what phone you have, there's a really great clear sleeve on the top for you phone that will actually allow you to use the touch screen through it. My iPhone 4S fits well in there, but I imagine the iPhone 5 might be a little tall for it and any of the larger Android phones (ie Galaxy) probably wouldn't fit at all.

The other thing is make sure you have enough vertical room between your top tube and stem for the 2 head tube straps. Mine was a little short and tried riding without the top strap and it just really liked to fall over to the side. Not so much that it'd fall off, but enough so that my knee would sometimes hit it. I ended up making the top strap work and it's been fine since then, even with the top strap just velcro'd a tiny bit.

So, if it'll work for your bike/phone I think it's a great option, but if not it's probably not worth your time.

You must have skinny legs. Happened to me too. I got a Lezyne mini that doesn't have the seat post strap.

I have the older version, I also have a money belt that I found at a surplus store it's the same size. I believe it is made by Lewis and Clark.

For the OP. Leyzne, and a few other company's, make bags without the seat post strap. I liked the Lezyne version it is very tight under the seat.

Is that what people do? Or has anyone found an under-saddle solution that does not have the velcro strap around the seat post? Nashbar has some that seem to fit that bill, but I read reviews of them breaking off and people losing their bag.

I welcome any suggestions or solutions.

Thanks,

I too can't stand having all that stuff in my jersey but I don't like saddle bags. I like my tool roll. Made to order by super cool people in Echo Park. I'm also pretty sure it's in line with the rules.
