TDF Sprinters are Big Fellas

Kittel goes 6'1 190lbs.....that's a huge guy considering he is thin and lean. He must walk around in the off season at 215lbs or more....What a beast. I cannot imagine the suffering he goes through in the Mountains...How big id Sagan or the Gorilla? I know Cav is short but solid.

I thought they said 180 but for a cyclist, yup, that's big.

what got me was a couple days ago when the young guy from S America was 5'8" 135 lbs. Sagan is 6' - 160 according to Wikipedia

And here I am trying to get under 170. I'm 6' also

Dang 190! No wonder sprinters are crazy strong.

What surprised me is that Cadel Evans is 150 at 5'9. That's normal status, yet he's such a great climber too.

at 6-1 and about 220 (former weight lifter with a beer belly now) it wasn't very long ago that I was 210 at about 10% body fat. probably would have made a pretty good sprinter but frankly I couldn't have lasted long enough on the climbs to make it worth while.

25 years ago I was a nut that did high miles... I was 6'3" and 215 with a hydrostatic weighed body fat of 8%. I liked hills and time trials back them as I was always better for endurance than sprinting\short bursts of speed.... I can remember when I was in HS in the early '80's and weighed in at 6'0" and 165-170... I cannot fathom being that skinny again especially since I'm an Uber-Clyde at the moment pushing 300#!

Many of them with regular clothing look just normal, unless you are like 5 feet tall and 130 pounds, in that case anybody will look big besides you hehehe

agree. cycling sprinters might be big when compared to cyclists who are not sprinters, but they really arent that big in general.

I laughed when I saw that. I am 6'2" and used to wrestle 183 in school. It was hard to stay that lean way back then. I weigh 250 now. I'm not great but lots of peps are amazed how I climb up stuff. I spend twice as many calories as my GF to climb the same climb. I have to work my ass off. I'm sure it would be sooooo easy at thier slight weights. Whem I see 6'1" #190 I think in my head ( skinny as *%@#)

I'm a sprinter and I'm a big fella.
Kittel's weight at 190? Probably not, I would put he and Greipel around 180 (as is Cancellara), Cav is in the low 150's.
I have raced as heavy as 206 but last year raced at 180 (I'm 5'10.5"). I have a picture from a race where I got a callup and on the line with some guys from Kenda, BMC, Mountain Khakis amongst others you see the size difference yet in regular clothes I looked very very thin. At that point my legs were "significant", now? Off the chain...
After having packed it in last year my weight has gone up (234 right now) but my two loves are cycling and powerlifting/bodybuilding.
At 180 I can climb like the wind YET when getting ready for the 'big show' I weighed 156 at which point I looked very sick.
Sprinters can take on many different bodytypes.
Kittel, Greipel and Cippo are bigger guys and have the weight/power go in all sorts of conditions (hence both of the first two using 54x11 on Tuesday)
Cav is a speed demon but doesn't seem to have to power/weight to dominate in conditions that have a slight uphill finish
Sagan is just a beast and can go anywhere, anytime, anyhow
It's all relative...

I hadn't done much reading on Miguel Indurain, but I was surprised to learn that he and I are almost exactly the same size. At race weight he was between 172-178 pounds and 6'2". I'm 6'3" and fluctuate between 170 and 180. I do fine in flat road races, but I just can't climb with my lighter teammates. Respect to a guy like Indurain who must be one of the heaviest TDF winners ever, although I'm not even going to scratch the surface of the doping debate with him.

For what it's worth, my fiancee thinks 175 or below is too skinny for my frame and made me promise her I'd be 185 by the wedding...

Indurain as em, they were and are freaks of nature.

I agree with waki, you have sprinters in any size but actually in the last years only the big guys are the ones that shine but maybe cav, he is just normal and if you look at him he looks chubby compared with the other sprinters.

Teo Boss, terrific track sprinter he looks like a road rider, from looking at him he doesnt even look as a track sprinter. Remember a track sprinter from chile, really tiny... like 5,7 he was well fit but you might not suspect he was a sprinter, in matter of fact i thought he was a roady, the guy was darm strong and fast.

Hmm...big george i believe started his career as sprinter too, he doesnt even look like one tho and probably he never did.

they're quoting Sagan at 160lbs but I highly doubt it.

although his weightloss is evident this season. he's been racing hard since the start of the year. props for being old school.

I got to see Sagan at a fundraiser/meet and greet for Sherwins "Bicycles for Humanity" prior to the ATOC. He didnt seem much bigger than some of the other Cannondale riders.

I'm about 6'4" 1/2 and fluctuate between 170 and 180. I lost quite a few pounds last year when I started riding about 150-200 miles a week and also changed my diet. My co-workers thought I was dying from a terminal disease or something...but were relieved to find out that I wasn't dying, I was just a road cyclist (Although now they're concerned about the terminal lycra wearing...)

I noticed i'm the same height and weight as marcel kittel yesterday(i think he may be a little faster than me). At 6'2" 190 i look good in a shirt when i go out, so i won't be changing my diet to lose anymore weight.

I don't like seeing close ups of Greipel's face this year. His body fat seems to have gotten so low that he has metabolized his facial flesh.

As mentioned, 6'1" and 190 as discussed is not heavy or big...maybe by world class cycling stds but certainly not the average population.
I am 6"1" and 187# now and many would consider me 'slim' and have a body like a cyclist which I am. Now Kittel likely has stronger legs than me and more mass in legs and less in his upper body. I believe my ideal cycling weight is likely 178# if I were to get a bit more serious, but I already ride enough and eat what I like.
