I just want to throw my NEW mtb into the mix just to show how some bikes have recently stepped backwards, technology wise.
.
This amazing bike is not at all far removed from my very first mtb back in 1983. Swap out the disc brakes and indexed shifting, and this exact bike could have been built back then. The innovations here are of design (really big wheels and tires, frame geometry) and not of tech/engineering.

That said, that Moots is a pure time capsule.

I wish they'd produce these in a standard 26 inch bike, so I can prod my way through rock gardens easier than on my 2.1 inch tired bike. 29ers are a little too "big handling" for my tastes. I think things are starting to come full circle in the sense that those who have been there and done that are a little wary of $$$ suspension rebuilds on a recurring basis.

If you want a Surly mtb with some vintage flare, try a LHT with a mountain-flavor build. If 80s mtbs weren't so plentiful, i'd want to build a fake-retro mtb out of a trucker, just for kicks.

I love the simplicity and I love the way it rides. Its kind of heavy, tho. But I dont care. My racing days are long gone.

A beautiful bike yes, but don't think I would agree with you about it being the same as what was available in 1983. Sure Cunningham had already introuduced the sloping top tube but looking at the wheel clearance between that tire and the bent seat tube, the 29" wheels, The tires with real tread etc. that bike has come a long ways from what was offered in 83.
Who made a mass produced seat post that would have been long enough for that frame in 83? Compact crank, 9 (or 10) speed rear cassette etc....
A few of mine from 83/84. Rest assured they have totally different geometry and ride characteristics than what your modern Surley has:

Awesome rides! When you mention ride characteristics, what are the differences that you notice between something like your Moots and a modern 26" hardtail? Geometry is something that has piqued my interest for a while, but haven't quite wrapped my brain around and am curious how those slack angles affect the ride.

Did not want this good bike to go by uncomplimented. I have the same frame set hanging in my garage. I used it a lot a few years ago, but now it has been sitting while I decide what to do with it. Cool, and very unusual old frame.

I'd even be happy with 2.5-2.8's in something other than a 1200g 26 inch freeride/DH tire. Somebody ought to make a wider or deeper xc tire for rigid bikes that still get taken off road in anger.

Bike polo bike complete.. for now. Need to try out the gearing and once I settle on something I'll remove the rest of the cassette. until then i can change speeds by adjusting the limit screw, though the chainline is pretty bad on the small/small setting.

yeah it's the TT-Lite frame.. very nice.. almost feel bad using it for bike polo but it needs a fair amount of work to make into a rider (at least new fork, new BB, new chainrings), so it's been hanging on my wall for almost a year. at least now it will be used. and yeah i compressed the fork all the way and held it with zip ties to stop any unexpected compression while playing, and to also increase the effective head tube angle for sharper turns. I'm considering putting a smaller tire on the front to increase the HT angle even more
