I need a bike
I had some sort of Fischer mountain bike that I got from my dad last year (it was bought used about 12 years ago), but somebody stole it. I liked it.
I need a bike for commuting to and from school and the grocery store in Northern Vermont. All weather, up to light snow and mud. Dirt and really rough roads occasionally, and will be on trails sometimes, a bunch of hills, some relatively steep. I am not a remotely experienced in biking. Rarely will I be going more than 7 miles. I will not go over $500, and the cheaper the better, ideally $350 or under.
Sizewise, I am 20 years old, 205lbs, but dropping weight quickly through diet and exercise, 5'10", in spite of my weight, I am in pretty good shape. I would prefer to be sitting more upright while riding, but that isn't a deal breaker.
I am happy to modify a bike with whatever tires or whatever else (I already planned to get a light and cargo rack on the back), just as long as it stays under $500. If that is the case, the bike should be around $350. Still, cheaper is better.
Any advise for what bike I should get is much appreciated. Thank You.

It sounds like you need another bike like the one that was stolen. The trick will be to find one with the same measurements if you know what they were. You'll find something eventually and when you do and if it is good fit, take measurements so you can easily duplicate that fit.
