I always wonder why we choose black for the colour of December. Shouldn't shiny silver or gold be more appropriate?

Looks like my last entry is missing a picture! Is the intent to capture only new black bikes or keep a history of a bike for each year?
the following pictures were taken within the last hour. Not a pretty bike but a very sweet ride with Suntour Superbe Pro and Mavic 501 hubs. Superbe Pro hubs need to be built.

My latest acquisition -- a late-1970s Soma Competition. I was ready to replace the frame on my crap-weather bike, which was most recently a Bianchi Nuovo Racing that accumulated both tens of thousands of miles and a significant amount of rust. I had purchased a replacement Bianchi frame, but it wants a repaint, when this Soma popped up locally for a hundred bucks. It's an obvious copy of the mid-'70s Raleigh Competition, though arguably a better bike. I've never owned an all-Japanese bike and I must say, it is quite nice. It came full-600 EX (though I have since swapped out for some of my mongrel rider components). The frame is 10-tube Tange chrome moly (the head tube is seamed steel) and the ride is quite nice. It's stable, handles my dirt road quite well, and is a fun ride. Not quite as spirited as the Bianchi frame, but still fun and very smooth. It was made for 27" rims, but the brake reach also works with 700C and the extra clearance provided under the fenders when fitted with 28 mm 700C tires is welcome. The frame was made by Kuwahara and I have seen similar frames with slightly different decals sold under at least one other private-label brand, also from this manufacturer. Soma in this era was a brand imported by a large US shop, and lasted for several years until the yen became too strong against the US dollar. There is no connection with the current Soma bike company. Workmanship is quite good, and much better than Raleighs, Bianchis, and most other European manufacturers of the era. The only downside is the Japanese standard headset and stem dimensions, though these are not as problematic as the French standard that was being phased out around that time. The saddle is a Brooks Pro copy labeled "Belt" instead of Brooks. It uses thick leather like the Brooks, but is not at the same level of quality. This bike anchors the bottom end of my herd. What I love about these mid-range bikes is how little difference there is between the quality of the ride they offer and that of much more expensive bikes, especially within the same era. For me, at least, there is almost zero difference in what I call "the fun factor."

I have a second one too, it's waiting in line for a refurb. The stem is still mostly black on it.

Then there's the old Trek 5200 that is the least comfortable of my vintage carbon frames but is admittedly a fast ride.
This is modern made yet oh so classic. Absolutely a blast to ride also.
