When newer is not "better," or even close.....
I know, "better" is a subjective term, but this is not about tubing, or steel, or carbon or anything.
Lately, I've dabbled a bit in gravel, notably a couple of builds, a 2017 and a 2019.
I remember when it was Shimano and Campy and Suntour. Then it hit the fan.
Disc-mechanical.
Disc-hydraulic.
Flat mount, whatever else mount.
Master cylinders on the caliper.
Master cylinders on the stem.
Master cylinders on the shift lever.

All; my modern stuff I purchased has never even been road tested by me because my main rides that I maintain for immediate use all have rim brakes and 9 or 10 speed rear cassettes and double or triple cranks.
One modern update that I think old school C&V folks are missing out on is road tubeless. To me the advantages of the better tire technology is significant. And making the conversion does not mean giving up you classic and vintage ride. It merely involves having your old hubs built up with some quality tubeless ready aluminum (or even carbon fiber for that matter) rims. The increased grip, access to superior tires and flat prevention are all big draws for the modern tubeless.

Really I hang out in this section because I like steel bikes but I get frustrated with old standards, with my DD bike I really want to do things like charge my phone while riding it's a $200 ad on to my modern bikes and pretty much impossible on quill era stuff. I'm not limited on modern frames, I can still get square taper cranks in whatever ring size I want but I can also put a modern 11/12 speed cassette with modern ratios in the rear without drama.
On the other hand I can still buy a new Colnago Master and I'll probably pick one up before I head back to the states since I'll have weekends available to dedicate to miles and there's not much sexier than Italian steel. I think this whole debate comes down to what your goals are I think my "gravel" bike will turn into a Surly BigEasy for DD duties, my existing Cross Check for distance riding, and , Karate Monkey for trails and off road camping.
