I'm glad I don't know what you look like, or this visual would be too much to handle.

That doesn't sound good.

Yeah, I have a sore right hip flexor. I just saw the pt who did some ART work and it feels a lot better. Right now I just can't put any power into my right leg, so it may take some time to get things balanced out. The good news is that its just a sore muscle and not a real injury, I just have to figure out how to strengthen the right safely.

i used to set PRs on the trainer a lot. something about going so hard you can't really see straight which isn't exactly safe to do on open roads. but then again, after a week or so of adaptation, I didn't really see a drop in power on the trainer compared to the road (and for longer duration, would actually see an increase)

I'm sure this conversation has been had 100x, but...
Like many people say, I find that when I ride the trainer, I need to knock 7% or so off power targets. When I do go whole hog (see what I did there @mattm) on the trainer I get muscle soreness in the adductor area.
I don't have any reason to think those muscles can't be adapted, but what I always wonder is how well that adaptation would translate to riding on the road. IOW, the guys who ride the trainer all winter, are they spending some of that effort developing muscles that aren't actually that directly engaged when riding on the road?
I hope it doesn't translate that well, because that would mean my willingness to train outdoors in totally crappy conditions over the winter is a comparative advantage. But really I have no idea.

I haven't ridden outside since christmas time (once) and before that thanksgiving (once). That's pretty much on par for most of the last ten winters.

That sounds miserable. I've been indoors for about a week and it does not have me in a happy place.

I do agree with stein's outlook that trainer workouts can usually be much more pointed and make much better use of your time assuming you have power based intervals on your plate. I don't mind the trainer, I just don't seem to be able to generate the power.

I suppose that any marginal advantage from training on the road vs the trainer is totally swamped by the inverse advantage. That is, somebody who is willing to work hard on the trainer all the time, while everybody else is struggling to get motivated, is going to be so much more fit that the schlub who trains outdoors as much as he can, because there will always be fewer training hours available outdoors than indoors.

I rode outdoors at 5am, no arm warmers. Could have even worn fingerless gloves if I'd wanted

From using a wahoo kickr and a stages power meter I've seen how much dead time riding outdoors solo or a group you get vs riding on a trainer too. 3 hours on the trainer is 3 hours. 3 hours in a group is like 1.5 hours on a trainer.

I generally can keep softpedaling to a max of 3-5min of time over a 5hr outdoor ride, but I'm riding solo all the time so it's not hard to avoid it when I pick the right route and the workout calls for steady state all day. One of the things that is nice about outdoor stuff is you get used to pushing over the top and down the other side of all of the things, and I miss the varying torque feel of riding outdoors when I'm on the trainer. That said the trainer feels a lot more like lifting weights because it's an extremely consistent power output and torque, if that makes sense. I'm sure it's helped my hamstrings get stronger this winter.

training status = shame. have been absolutely dead tired the past two mornings (a rarity for me) so took both days off (work stress isn't helping...). back to the grind tomorrow. thinking if I can push through this week, next week may need to be a rest week before ramping up the intensity even more.
despite all my *****ing on here, i've actually been training pretty consistently, just with much lower hours than years past (when I did too many hours) and am very interested to see how I feel in the spring. i've definitely put on weight from last year, but I was also way too skinny last year and I do think it hurt me. i'm either going to be pretty strong compared to the past or pathetically weak. it has been kind of weird adjusting to training with a full time job. I know plenty do it, just not something I'm used to and forces one to have a whole different perspective on training hours, etc. especially this time of year when stuck indoors. i must say though, that if I hadn't have joined a new team, I think my motivation to race would be a lot less than it is.

40 minutes into my tempo ride; watching Better Call Saul on netflix. Have another hour to go and need to find something interesting to watch.
