Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So I took my road bike out for the first time this Spring after having ridden my fixed gear bike all Winter. I had forgotten just how fast these bikes can go.. Usually on my fixed gear 21 mph seems like it is a fast pace for me to sustain, but on my road bike today I was 'cruisin' at 24, 25 mph. I was able to go so fast that my lungs started to fill up with lactic acid and made the inside of my mouth burn. Thank God for the Big Chain ring. Okay.. very sleepy now.. more later.

I've also noticed the tendency to stay in the big ring more often after a winter of fixed. After I retrained my legs to pedal through the 6 and 12 o clock dead spots I've noticed a much smoother spin overall.

I am thinking last night I saw my recent fixed gear riding starting to pay off. I went out solo on my roadie and did a 30 mile loop .7 mph faster than I have averaged on any solo ride to date. I did some good power climbing in the big ring and I don't think I used my 26t cog other than in the last mile when I was trying to do a cool down but was climbing.

I can't wait to see what more time on the fixie is going to do for me.

That's really odd because I've noticed that my fixed gear eliminates the dead spot because it powers me through it. Moving back to my geared bike actually makes the dead spot more pronounced.

It was an out and back loop...that tail wind would have been a head wind at some point.

But to answer the question...no it was actually the first day this spring when the wind WASN'T blowing...maybe that's why?

Yes, I have this condition. However this time I really over did it. It seems I was not yet ready to handle the powers of the 'big chain ring' - I tried to maintain a speed of ~ 23 mph going up a hill.. and soon after it hit me hard, my lungs felt like I had just inhaled battery acid, and my throat and mouth started to get coated with really sticky flem that made me drool constantly for about ten minutes or so until the burning sensation in my lungs subsided and was under control.
The moral: Respect the big chain ring!!
