My ALAN sported a 25mm seat post. This would be a perfect group for such a bike but who would want to destroy the NOS value? Those groups, years ago, were being offered for $5,000. Would I but the group as an investment. Yes, but then how would I cover the cost of a diovorce?-(

Hard pass. But I'd very much enjoy seeing it on person. I'd even agree to wear a drool cup and linen gloves to protect it.

This is a great purchase for someone, but I'm not that someone.

@randyjawa - if I have ever seen that pic of that bike before...... I had forgotten how truly elegant that ALAN shines.

Btw, 5K is a pretty good price for that one - particularly with the case in such condition. Over time, the rubberized outer case breaks down but this one looks spankin' new. Haven't kept up with prices since I sold mine, but it's less than I got for my unused set (around 2005).

It's not like they're making any more of them...

hopefully they are around for anniversary 100.
and trust they do a better job than for the 80th.

FYI: On a whim I reached out the the seller. He's firm (for now) on 5k, and willing to ship, too.

I actually thought about it for a few hours, but 5k is about 1k more than I'd be willing to shell out for the set. Not saying it's not worth 5k (this kinda stuff is subjective, as we all know), but that number doesn't work for me 'n my budget. Oh, one more thing: I noticed the seller's photos don't show the registration card or grey brake cable housing - those would be part of a complete gruppo. If the registration card is in fact missing, IMHO, the value of the set would be significantly reduced. I asked about these items and am awaiting word back on whether or not they are included.

He has the brake cables, but not the registration card. He local to me, and Ihave spoken with him a number of times. He thinks the registration card is around somewhere, I’m not so sure he will find it the the clutter he has. He is very firm on the price. I gave it serious thought, but can’t justify it. I have basically waved a pile of $100 bills at him and he won’t budge.

PS, it’s been for sale for months.

Bummer. The missing card would be a deal-killer for me. Couldn't justify 5k when the set is missing one of the main "claims to fame" of this gruppo. But that's prolly a good thing - I'd only look at it from time to time, then try to sell it for a profit myself a decade or so down the road. Been there, done that

The first time I saw one of these sets was in a bike shop up north. They had an old high wheeler parked out front and that got my attention. It was a small shop run by a very nice older man and his son. They sold new bikes and did quite a bit of service work by the look of things. In the case under the counter was one of these sets and I was blown away when he told me $2500 and it was cherry with everything there. I think it must have been early 2000’s . I’ve since seen some pretty high prices put on the sets but I don’t know if they actually sell that high.

Sell it in Japan and maybe you can double the price........ in the land where they sell 100 dollar melons and mangoes like jewelry in display boxes.....
I actually feel sorry for people who would put so much value on such inanimate things like these that end up just being looked at in their boxes, unused forever. There's just a lot more important things in life....

I hear ya. If I bought a 50th Anniversary Gruppo there's no way I could keep it in the box, but that's easy for me to say because I don't have that amount of coin to spare!
