Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rear hub on the Langster needs adjustment.

Gibbons is one of the new owners of the Wise River Club in Wise River, MT. The place is on Adventure Cycling's GDMBR, just before the start of the 24 mile climb up to 8,000' on the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway (if you are heading south). I have ridden the Byway north to south 3 times and have stopped at the place for lunch twice. The food is pretty darn good. The last time I was there (2016), about a half dozen participants in the Ride the Divide race came stumbling in after a heavy storm had passed through. I had gotten caught in it just as I was starting to descend. There was rain, sleet and snow at altitude. As I was leaving town, I ran into this guy, He asked me about my trip. I gave him a brief summary. He doffed his hat and said "Sounds like a plan!".

The rear bontrager wheel doesn’t feel smooth if I take the wheel off and spin it in my hands, on the bike it’s seems okay. I don’t know what that means.

Commuting woes. Last night 15 seats available, this morning 7 seats available, get to the airport zero seats available. Nothing Canceled. I should have dropped this trip when I had the chance.

Maybe new bearings, unless it's a loose ball set up. Then, an overhaul.

Yup. Pretty standard, but I don’t like relying on it. Too many variables. The captain can always say no, if the plane is weight restricted you are not getting on, the jumpseat could be broken, they could be doing training with a jump seater, etc.

is it loose ball or cartridge bearing? If cartridge I wouldn't worry about it. If it's loose ball it may need servicing. Could be dirt or a bad bearing. It's best to fix it before it takes out a race. They aren't replaceable. You would need the hub if it gets bad enough.

I’m thinking the same thing. You only live once. Perhaps you can compromise and meet him at Bucees.

Loose ball hub overhaul is one of the most satisfying bike maintenance jobs.

I suppose this is true, with the proper setup. I use an unknown brand tiny aluminum axle vise, in a large bench vise that doesn’t hold it well. It has never been a pleasant experience. As I was writing this, it occurred to me I have a jeweler’s vice kicking around. A possibly better option. I enjoy tuning up loose ball, or caged ball headsets.
But all in all, what I need is a better axle vise; the one I have is barely more than a pos.

So for various reasons, I am not really into using a saddlebag and carry a spare tube/minipump/tire levers/co2/etc. in a little cloth drawstring bag that I keep in my middle jersey pocket.

However, the bag has come apart due to some breaks at the seams and minor holes (likely from the edge of the tire levers).

Any good suggestions on other options? I used to just use a Ziplock bag but those seem to tear too frequently. I am looking for something a little sturdier. I wonder if they make drawstring bags out of Tyvek (tm) or similar HDPE fibers, anyone know??

not super sure. On short rides, I usually only do 1 bottle and carry stuff in one of those plastic containers that fit in bottle cages. For longer rides where I'll need both bottles, I like to carry two tubes, two CO2 +inflator, tire boot, patches, multi tool w chain tool and spoke wrench... not putting all that in my pockets. So I do a saddle bag.

seems like COVID is really going around these days. Second person in my department tested positive this morning. I have a booster scheduled for this afternoon. Hopefully I can stay clear.

This also means that work is gonna be a bit strenuous. On the flip side, that probably means more time in the lab for me chipping in. But I like it that way.

I went with a minimalist saddle bag for when I need one. Orucase is great! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09NK7ML6R?th=1

I suppose one could remove the strap and stuff it in a pocket. I have never tried that though.
