Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized Propero 3 - is it low profile

Looking to buy a road helmet. I'd like something not so bulk. Currently using a mtn bike helmet. I want something low profile and sleek for about $100 or less.

Thanks

I wouldn't say so, but go try it on. Helmets are one of the things that should be tried on for size and shape and, with Specialized's pricing policy, there's no benefit to buying online vs in-store.

Can anyone recommend a low profile road bike helmet? Preferably in white.

Some like the Kask Protones. I like the Lazer G1 MIPS, and have two of them. But, your definition of "low profile" may be different than mine or anyone else's. I will also only buy MIPS helmets, but that is me, so that rules out Kask.

The Lazer G1 MIPS can be found for around $150. I'm not sure you will find any of the helmets that most consider "low profile" for $100 or less unless you find a closeout type sale.

I would not buy a helmet without trying it on for fit and comfort. I have yet to find a Specialized helmet that fits my egg well, even though I love their shoes.

This.

p.s. if you live in NYC I am sure there are plenty of shops nearby you can go check out for size/fit

You're putting the cart before the horse - you need to figure out what brands fit your head, first. After that, look up and down their line to see what strikes the best balance - within a brand, fit is usually the same, but weight, ventilation, bulk, etc, will usually cost you more.

I tried on the Propero 3. It seems fairly low profile. Seemed to fit good. Then I tried on the Lazer Vento. The Vento seemed to fit my head much more comfortably. While I could have made some adjustments to the Propero (chin straps) the fit just didn't seem as natural. The Vento is fairly low profile.

Pricing was not inline with what I expected. Dealer was selling the Propero 3 for $130 ($97 on specialized's website) and the Vento for $200 (seems to be $299 everywhere I looked - some odd colors discounted further down). The dealer didn't have a white Vento at the location I went to. I'll try an in stock location this weekend.

The Lazer Mips & Kask Protone in white are ~$300 on the internet.

So much for the $100 budget.

I found that even within the same brand, different models can have a completely different fit.

I've been wearing a Lazer Z1 that fits me perfectly...decided to order a G1 because I like the styling better. It turned out to be a completely different shape and fit. Found that with POC, too. I wear a Tectal Race Spin for mtb'ing...tried on one of their road helmets and it felt like I was wearing a square-shaped helmet.
