First post to classic thread. Have a 1989 Schwinn Circuit that I built back in 1990 while I worked in a bike shop. Many years have passed and basically all my bike knowledge has gone with it. Has a Shimano 600 6 speed cog with indexed shifter.

Looking to buy a new set of quality wheels and cannot find anything that has a threaded hub, everything that I've found only accepts cassettes. Any recommended where I can find decent "classic" wheel set.

Freewheel 700c should be easy to find however a nice set of higher end wheels might be a bit tougher. Try a site called VeloOrange. https://velo-orange.com/collections/wheels

Are your rims shot?
I prefer loose ball hubs and would get a good pair of Dura Ace hubs from a used wheel set or eBay and build some wheels with H Plus Son rims and DT comp spokes.

Are you near a local co-op?

If you are adventurous, building up a set of wheels can be very rewarding and relaxing. I've gotten very good at building wheels the last few years.

I'll say that it comes down to how you intend to build the bike and the aesthetic you prefer. I have the same Circuit and I think black wheels look great on it. The problem I have with buying a new set is they're all built with black hubs. That I do not like on this bike. To get the aesthetic I prefer, I used black rims and laced them to a set of vintage aluminum hubs (Ambrosio Excellence and DA 7400 in this case). I'll assume your shifters are 7-speed indexed. If you intend to keep these, you'll want to use a hub that is compatible with the indexing. All very doable on that bike. Good luck!

Your bike looks awesome, perfectly period rad. Like the Dura Ace, has me thinking about more upgrades. But something about my 105 cranks with perfectly preserved biopace sticker and weird oblong shape is oddly satisfying.

The ERD of some H Plus Son TB-14s is the same (+1mm) as the ERD of those Araya Tubular rims so you could use the same spokes. (BUT, tubulars are really cool.)

I agree with you on the Biopace. I just did 103miles and 10,000ft yesterday with Biopace rings on my Ironman. Vintage steel and Biopace work well together.

It's not hard to build wheels. You can just use your upside down bike frame as a stand. Sheldon Brown has a very easy to understand web page on wheel building. What's the worst that can happen, that you learn a new skill?

My 1989 Circuit - bought last year - came with the original wheels - Shimano Sante hubs laced to Wolber Profil rims, as well as the rest of the Sante groupset. The hubs are freehubs, so a 126mm wheel with freehub would still be appropriate, but you are definitely looking for 126mm.

Yay! Another Circuit owner! Mine came with a wheel set from a Prologue(?) which are decent but I scored magic from FB marketplace which has become my go-to for goodies. Pre-disc brake/index shifting stuff can be found for reasonable sums. Alternately, find a small mom and pop bicycle shop that has been around for awhile and ask if they have anything.

ebay and the local Craigslist haven’t been great for me. Anonymous flakey sellers and sometimes stupid high prices.

As mentioned above, a local co-op is good too.

Of course THE BEST place is here. Friendly people with honest descriptions.

Thanks, started searching for truing stands. Building one set of wheels should pay for the stand itself.

It is getting harder and harder each year to find built C&V wheels in good condition. Especially clincher wheels (tubulars can still be found relatively easy because so many were taken off bikes after purchase.) in 700C and even harder if you are looking for 32 spoke wheels. Even finding 32H hubs is difficult these days as everybody seems to be looking for them.
The supply of existing C&V wheels are just continuing to get used up. So if you find a good set, run and get them.
In the near future, it is turning out to be that one will have to build up your own wheels from scratch, using components that one might still find out there.

Pretty easy, have Tim at Yellow Jersey build you a set. For rims I like the Velocity A23s, but lots of choices. Not hard to find 6 speed freewheel hubs.
