Carbon fiber and degradation over time (GCN)

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My worry about carbon fibre is that it can start "cracking" on the inside.
While metal frames (steel, aluminium, titanium) show cracks on the outside, easily visible before they fail.
With carbon fibre, detecting crack propagation takes some scanning, while with metals you can just visually inspect the frame.

The video said the mode of failure for carbon fibre is "gentle" (or a similar term), which I understand as "not sudden/unexpected." I'm not really sure if that's always the case (forks, or stems for example). As far as I know, it can be quite sudden.

My (very) long-winded drivel on bicycle frame materials.

So what your saying is, I now have another reason to buy more bikes? My wife is not going to let me on this site much longer.

Five will last longer than 1 or 2 since you’d be spreading the wear.

No, this means that you can eventually break in your endurance road bike so that it would be compliant enough for light gravel use.

EXACTLY! I spread out the wear among 10 bikes, so none of them get that much stress over time. And I can put them all into a 7'x7'x7' space in the garage.

You need more bikes!

What's the story behind Blue? It exists today, but in Boulder instead of Atlanta. Some kind of re-birth?

Please take a photo to show me how to reclaim some garage space.

I don't have one with all 10, but here's one with 9. Usually the 10th is on the trainer across the room.

Thank you. I am impressed, although I do not have enough free wall space to pull this off.

This photo can also serve as one of those "one of these is not like the others" puzzle: Canyon Endurace?

Dude, the second one from the left hanging on the wall is also blue. The one I mentioned appeared to be the only carbon fiber bike.

Yep. Bought in 2020, as inventories of new bikes were dwindling. I think it was the next-to-last Endurace with 105 in America.

Funny you should mention that, because yesterday I pulled the bike from the corner to ride. And, yes, it was a pain. But worth it.

4 out of 10 bikes are blue. 4 out of 10 bikes are red. One is black. One is Titanium (not shown)

Nope. There's also a CF Bianchi 928. Just look for the celeste bar tape.

The list, from oldest to newest:
  • 1982 Lotus Classique - red, with Shimano 600 Arabesque
  • 1982 Lotus Supreme - blue, with 7200 Dura Ace
  • 1985 Centurion Ironman - red, with 6207 600
  • 1989 Schwinn Circuit - red, with Sante
  • 1990 Battaglin MAX - red, with 2006 Chorus
  • 1994 Cannondale R500 - blue, with RX100
  • 1995 Litespeed Ultimate - gray, with 7410 Dura Ace
  • 1996 Ritchey Road Logic - Blue, with 7800/7410 mixed groupset
  • 2006 Bianchi 928 - black, with Veloce
  • 2020 Canyon Endurace - blue, with 105
(I'm a bit of a Shimano fanboi.)

They were bought.
https://www.bikeworldnews.com/2014/0...g-group-ashes/

I believe they changed hands again but I could be wrong.

Sucked because a women's pro team had put in payments for new bikes for the year and through all of this the bikes sat in a container. Then when they bought the out and took over everything they left the ladies high and dry. The team folded.

I bought out the chains that one of the assembly houses in Taiwan was using to build them. Still have a small pile of them.
