Good posts and good information all around. When In doubt, the geometry takes precedence and those two certainly would not be considered touring models.

Human error, 100%. Just one look at a 470 (and 660S) says race bike all day--not even a hint of "touring" capability or intention. The geometry is identical to the 460/560/660/670. It even says says so in the description, including the 470 being 460-based, and the 660S simply changing out a few components from a 660. The '90s 470s are also not tourers by any stretch--they're as much tourers as I am a TdF winner.
You can believe restoration.bike til the end of time if you like, but I would not trust their info. The sheer number of Trek models listed as racing bikes but that are sport/sport touring is astonishing. Not good.

These are working for me.......
Serial numbers======> https://web.archive.org/web/20210425...ialNumbers.htm
Models, Years, Colors======> https://web.archive.org/web/20210421...l_numbers1.htm
Get a 7 day free trial to Adobe Acrobat and convert these htm webpages to pdf files and then you never have to worry about getting future access to these with Wayback Machine. On the serial number page, you will also have to convert each dedicated serial number page from the embedded chart (TABLE I 1980-1986) if you are selecting from the serial number range that fits the number you are looking for. Those individual pages in the chart show all the size and model information for each specific serial number.

Hey y'all, I'm bumping this. I picked up this cherry '81 Trek 614 today. I don't have room for it, and not sure what to do with it other than clean up, re-cable, but I couldn't pass it up.
But as a result of acquisition, I needed to decode the serial and realized this site was down, so naturally I came here first to hunt. Not cool it's gone away, and I hope Skip/Douglas is OK. He was running up on his mid-70s if my sleuthing is correct, so there's a chance he's not doing so hot. I can't find any death records for him though. Interesting dude, from what I gathered!
smontanaro I plan to host the website pages for free, and I'd started ripping them out of Archive.org just like you did. I stopped when I read you were working to rip it all down. Before I continue, where'd you land on all that? (Nevermind, my rip is complete, I used the wayback downloader to grab everything possible, just shy of 1,200 files)
As I've offered to others on here in the past with their bike-oriented content, I have a long-time Dreamhost reseller account that I host my personal stuff, and a gaggle of non-profits and reference data. As I've offered to Jon, Kurt and others who host pivotal vintage bike data, I've the space to host sites when someone can't anymore, and technical knowledge to manage after a couple of decades in the industry. I don't mind paying yearly domreg fees to keep a domain alive, and do a little SEO to seed it.
Let me know! I know I don't post as much these days, too much going on. But I'm still active! (feel free to PM me any time.
Oh, and here's the Trek tax ... anyone looking for a mint 1981 Trek 614, 57cm/22.5"?

Looks like there was a www.vintagetrek.com back in 2004... the Wayback Machine doesn't have all of the pictures, but it seems to have mostly been a personal page for a handful of people?
https://whois.domaintools.com/vintagetrek.com
It's registered, tied back to Mark Monitor, and linked in the WHOIS info as owned by "Trek Bicycle Corporation", as of 2006. Best guess is the original owner let it lapse, and/or it was probably snatched up by Trek via legal means/actions of some sort.

Hopefully nobody gets pissed at me for doing this, if so, my PM inbox is ready.
After exhausting all possible ways I could to find family etc. (dug pretty damn deep, lots of dead-ends), I temporarily tossed up an interim archive of the Vintage-Trek.com website here:
VintageTrek & smontanaro tagging you b/c I know you both are working toward similar. I'm only in this for $9 on the domain registration and about 20 minutes of my time (whereas I spent 6-7 hours trying to track down Mr. Echert).
Either way, putting up this data is a hell of a lot easier than using WaybackMachine, and I will happily transfer ownership of this domain to either of you, or redirect it to your desired website if/when you're ready. Else it's indefinitely there.
I won't SEO seed this, in an effort to not add confusion to what's in the SEs already.

I changed the title graphic to denote this is simply a archival mirror - and I'll throw in a legal disclaimer to pop-up to that effect, with a few extra details, crediting Mr. Echert.VintageTrek & smontanaro tagging you b/c I know you both are working toward similar. I saw the 620 mentioned earlier too. I started my first tour on an '85 620, and made it to Pueblo, CO, where it was stolen. 😭

This is awesome - greatly appreciate your efforts, thank you! It is obvious for all to see that it is a gesture made in the best of faith, and every Trek owner and lover (myself included) is grateful for your initiative.

Glad to see so many are actively trying to preserve this info. Also sad to see that passing of Velocals.

That's good. Despite not needing it in this instance, it seems a couple of us are ready with backup plans for small reference websites like it. That's also good.

Awesome! Did someone settle up with the hosting company to extend the service? Or do we think Skip did? If anyone hears from Skip, as his email should be working now, please let us know over here!!
At some point this week, I'll redirect the domain I purchased to point at the original site, but keep an archive copy with my hosting service. This will close the added loop and stay ready if it goes down again..

Is anyone else getting the "Account Suspended" page again? I went to check out some geo charts in the old brochures last night and found it defunct again.

Getting that also. And when I try to access "vintagetrekarchive.com", for some reason it now redirects to the suspended original "vintage-trek.com" URL - and gives the same result.

I assumed its return would be permanent, but if vintage-trek.com goes offline, someone please tag me here so I don't miss it - I don't monitor every reply. It only takes me 30 seconds to turn off the redirect and start serving up the 'archive' webpage again.
I know my copy won't go away any time soon
I just didn't want to disrespect Skip in any way by double-hosting that webpage. I'm not looking to steal thunder here... just looking to keep that critical info free and always available.

By the way - has ANYONE had any luck getting in touch with Skip or a family member to see what's up?
I presume his hosting provider offlines his email/DNS services when the website is down, so he doesn't get those messages.
I had no luck reaching anyone, the one person I managed to reach, she must've thought I was a scammer or something, the conversation was one-sided and lasted all of 10 seconds before abrupt ending.
I really didn't want to contact any of his old research colleagues, or business contacts. I stuck with trying to reach him or a family member.
