There's a sound reason for that. Puts them further out of the sightline when riding. It's a fact, documented many times in research and medical trials that what is known has physical effects on the body and what isn't doesn't. Researchers call this "the placebo effect". You can see I practice this to advantage. On my avatar, you can see a pair of sandals in the under the DT bottle cage. In that picture I am climbing a 14+% stretch of a two mile grade in a 42-17 gear. I made it and that dead weight I was carrying never crossed my mind. (Added benefit - when you rock the bike climbing, weight that low and centered has zero effect on the bike's rocking inertia. Those bottles are so close to the ground, they barely move on the wildest of bike swings. Believe me, I was rocking!! By contrast, TTers get the visual benefit but not the "feel" benefit putting the bottles behind the seat. Not an issue if they never stand.

One of the longer, slower builds I've ever done but maybe that's appropriate considering the intended use of this bike. Campy 8 speed group with Racing Triple RD. My willow triplized Campy crank wasn't working very smoothly so I sourced a nice IRD Defiant 46-30. I scavenged a 12t cog to make a 12-26 rear cluster. If the day comes (and I'm almost sure it will) when I want more climbing gear I'll probably build a Shimano rear wheel and use my Wheels Mfg spacer kit to add an 11-30 rear cluster. And Gugie will be pleased to see I got new pedals for this one.
Would you please post some more pix?

I worked all weekend but got her out today for a shakedown. Nothing shook loose and the fit is pretty much dialed on. Here are some post-ride quick pics. I might do some arty shots when things warm up in the spring. Decaleur is removed for some "Gugificazione" at L'Atelier.

IRD Defiant crank with Crank Bros Candy 3 pedals. I upgraded to Campy dust caps for added bling.

A view of my cowboy'ed fender attachment to compensate for long chainstays. Under remote guidance from Gugie, I drilled out the chainstay bridge to accept a long 6 mm bolt to use a wine cork spacer. I also managed to find a low profile braze on adapter to fit under the bottle cage without having to make any mods.
In it's original state the bike was lightly decal'ed and branded. The only thing missing now is the tubing sticker which, now that I hear Heron is back in business, maybe I can source one directly.

Better known as the @nlerner modification. I learned it from him. Cheaper than the Velo Orange "spring thingie" and works better - doesn't rattle. For those with horizontal dropouts, fenders and fatter tires, it'll compress enough to get your wheel out and still keep your coveted fender line.

Beautiful builds; thanks to Spaghetti Legs for the OP, offered in Before Times. As souplesss posted two years ago now, I am also on a search for a Heron Randonneur, 59 or 61. I have logged a lot of miles on a Heron Touring, and have Road, as well; I'd really like to complete the set with a Rando as I just like the ride of these bikes. Hard to find, I know . . .

Thanks! Great photo, and nice additions to the bike. I'm planning lots more riding and touring in my future as I am a few months away from a one-year countdown to workplace exit. What size is your Randonneur? It looks like my unicorn!

The green was a stock color, but I’ve always wanted a bike in British Racing Green. It is indeed 700c . As noted, Gugie bought this for me off Portland CL last spring. We planned the great gugified PNW tour, but all I owned were racing bikes. I came up with the cockamamie idea of saving on one way shipping by just buying a bike in Portland. All the fitting and set up was done long distance by Gugie and due to a problematic work schedule, the first time I saw the bike was a few minutes before setting off on a 400 mile tour!
I looked at several bikes on Portland CL, saw this one and asked Gugie to check it out for me. He said “sure!” And the next thing I hear from him is this pic of the back of his truck:

So I think that may answer one of my questions: Is this one of the ones from the shop of Todd Kuzma? He sold the brand to Greg Parker of Bicycle Classics. I've seen one Greg Parker Heron since the BC site stated them to be available, but only that one, built perhaps 2 to 4 years ago. Spaghetti, I'm guessing your bike either originated with Grant Peterson or later with Todd Kuzma. Didn't they both source the frames from Waterford?

The top tube is 57 cm. I keep telling myself I’m a year away from retirement ha ha but I probably should go a little longer so I can keep buying bikes.
All I know about Heron is probably the same you’ve been able to glean from the webs. I think a figured this was Kuzma built at one point, but not sure how I came to that conclusion.

Cool! I have only seen one Parker Heron, and I don't know how many have been made. I really like the way it looks and it looks like your painted frame is at least as good. I'm also a long-time fan of British Racing Green. I've been thinking about what color to paint my Woodrup, now that it's come back from cold-setting and other frame preps, the original gold and blue has been in my head, but maybe now I'll go for BRG. But I already have the blue decal set ...
