i've got a topeak super-tourist DX (disk brakes) rack on my bike, and it's usually carrying 1-2 ortlieb back-rollers. for extra room, or just traveling light, i'm considering a trunk-bag.

what's standing out is the ortlieb trunk bag and the topeak trunk dry-bag.

the topeak is 50% bigger and will fit onto my rack without an adapter plate. the ortlieb is probably better quality, but smaller and the side pockets aren't waterproof. i'm not sure yet if the ortlieb adapter plate will fit well on the rack i've got, and i'm not sure if the topeak bag is made with PVC (which i'd like to avoid).

anything else i'm missing in the comparison? does anyone have any opinions to share about these bags, or other waterproof trunk-bags i should consider?

my inquiry to the topeak distributor confirms that the drybag is made with a "PVC type drybag material". that's a bit discouraging, but it's not like the ortlieb bag is made out of sugar and spice.

I use a topeak trunk bag, non-waterproof. All I can say is it is great to slide/lock it into the rack and ride. I can remove the bag in about 2 seconds, if taking my time. Attach in about 3, it takes a bit to line up the track.

Havent had any problems with the track yet.

I'd like to get a trunk bag, too, but I hate PVC. I wonder if anyone (Carradice?) makes one out of cotton duck or similar.

Guys, the PVC they refer to is like the liner in a Chrome bag... or the drysak on a BOB trailer. It's decent stuff.

I'm actually thinking about just mounting a plastic tool box, or some kind of hard case trunk. I figure some tool boxes are waterproof or darn close to it, and I can get one for $12 or so. Anyone have good mounting system for tool boxes? If nothing else I'll just use it as a waterproof place to stash a bag that I pull out and go with, but it'd be nice to be able to put it on and off quickly.

I'm sure there are purpose-built bike hard trunks, and I'd like to see those too, but I'm assuming that the price goes from $12 to $120 when you put $3 worth of custom clips on and say "bicycle" in the name.

just bolt the sucker down, ive been thinking about using an old tool box i have laying around for the same thing, i just havent gotten around to doing it yet.

The Topeak Dry Bag might not work with the Ortlieb panniers. I have Ortlieb Backrollers and the mounting system gets in the way of the Topeak track. I have a Topeak trunk bag that lives in my garage now because it won't fit with the panniers.

do you have a "DX" rack? look at the pictures online... the non-DX racks look like they'll accommodate panniers OR a trunk bag. the DX racks should handle both at the same time.

I just strap a backpack with a bungee cord.
A lot more convenient to carry off the bike (high theft country).
For pouring rain, I go with Ortlieb panniers.
