Swapping Derailers
i have a 1999 Cannondale F600 mtn. It has three at the plate and 9 on the cassette (27). I currently have Shamano Deore XT and thought I would like to swap to Shamano 105 or Ultegra can I just change the front and rear derailers only.

Depends on how many speeds/what era.
Provide Model#'s to & from.
Off the top of my head-
Less than 10 cogs, Shimano mountain & road RDER's have the same cable pull.
There are a couple?? exceptions, thus why the need to know model & speeds.
Mountain & road FDER's have a different cable pull.
>9 speed, gets weirder and I'm too ignorant on what works with what, but I think it get less likely to match up.

A "Road" RDER of that era usually specifies a largest cog of 27T.
I swapped from an Altus 8 speed to a Tiagra 9 speed RDER since I tended to use "road" gears on my Rockhopper.
It shifted better with the ALTUS, so I switched back.
You will need a different cassette, but I can't tell you how different.
You still haven't provided model#'s, so I can't help more than that.
Maybe someone else will, but I don't bother to ask twice.

The road RDER probably won't have enough chain wrap capacity or handle the larger cogs.

Why don't you change the components that are causing the problem rather than the ones that won't matter?

New chain & cassette will make the biggest improvement.
