Stupid email subject
As some others may have, I received a marketing email today entitled, "The High Performance Helmet Leaving the Peloton in the Dust." It made me laugh.
First, I suspect there's no more than a few dozen riders world-wide where the marginal gain of a helmet, of all things, is going to make any difference against a peloton.
Second, and more broadly, how high performance can a helmet be? Can a helmet help pedal a bike?? Will race officials need to start checking for illegal helmets after they check for batteries and motors embedded in a bicycle???
Marketing. Pfui.

When I was racing, the Bell Razor was the hot new aerodynamic helmet. My parents felt it didn't have enough coverage/protection and bought me an Image Pro instead. I'm sure that's why I never made it to the Olympics (tongue firmly in cheek).

I could only afford a Bell Windjammer but lusted after a V-1 Pro. The Stratos would've kicked ass if you didn't overheat. '85 prices, but I seem to remember it was a bigger spread.

Perhaps it was a typo and was really describing its function when the rider wearing it fell off and the rest of the riders continued.
High performance helmet leaves peloton; in the dust.

Marketing snake oil BS. All the aero dynamics, weight reduction, training, proper diet, doping, all of it and more, has only gained us 3.5 mph in the average speeds at the TDF since 1958 till 2021!! 3.5 mph is nothing for all that technology, but there is a hidden secret to that average speed increase. That secret is that since 1958 till 2021 the average distance raced during the TDF has been reduced by about 500 miles, so the truth about the speed increase is really due to the riders are not being as tired as they once were, and that's why the average speed went up.
