Completely a theory, mind you.

as a kid, i hit the back end of parked cars while not paying the greatest attention.

one time i was on a schwinn traveler and hit a car while i was looking at something. i was going about 12 mph, and nothing happened to that bike.

another time, i was riding my dads panasonic (1000dx?) behind my friend at night. i would say we were going around 17-18mph. he swerved to the left and i hit the parked car. my dad's bike looked exactly like the rivendell. i ended up on the trunk and was totally fine. at least until i showed my dad his bike.

I have a ding that looks like my Le Tour got hit pretty hard. but really it is just superficial damage on that frame. I am convinced I can ghost ride this bike into a brick wall without much harm done. That picture is just crazy.

Of course - you were on a Schwinn Traveler. Upright bar cousin to the Varsity. I bet you left a big fat dent in the fender too.

Go hit that car with some 4130 True Temper and get back to me when you do.

Looking at that original picture gotta wonder if the rider didn't take a long trip over that railing or one like it further up the mountain.
