Grandis 80's Italian Steel Frame 54 cm
Italian steel, Grandis (?) frameset from the 1980's. Shiny & crisp metallic-blue with yellow lettering,
a very 'period-correct' look for this frame.
Gipiemme dropouts.
Some areas paint is chipped & scratched, tiny dent on top tube, as pictured, near the middle cable-guide, otherwise nice!
Will include, the original Simplex seat-post, Made in France
54 CM Center to Center
Just noticing this frame doesn't have common Grandis traits:
Pantographed head tube
Panto-ed/engraved fork crown
G cutout on BB
Grandis on seat stay cap, scalloped stays
Adjusted price accordingly. Might be one of their lower priced builds, if they even made such frames. Anyone?
$320

Metalwork does appear very different than other Grandis I have seen or the one I own.

This is an attractive frame, but I have some questions. Some i've bought have had surprising matters discovered when I received them, expensive to resolve, so I have to ask.
1. What is the seat tube angle? Can measure cheaply with a round dial angle finder, about $10 from any Ace Hardware, if you assume a level top tube.
2. What is the tubeset? Any tell-tale impressions on the tubes or steer tubes? Or did Grandis usually make custom tube selections to suit the rider? 26.5 mm seat tube ID does not seem like a common norm, and could be hard to replace.
3. Was 125 mm rear OLN common? I have an early '80s Mondonico which had 126 OLN when new, but transitioning to 130 OLN was under way before 1990.
4. Do you have the rear dropout adjuster screws? I assume Gipiemme dropouts provide for them, since this seems like a racing frame, with its clean lines and minimal use of braze-ons.
5. Is there a braze-on for the front derailleur?
6. Do you have the seatpost bolt? Is there any sign of damage to the seat lug?
I've always read great things about Grandis, and this frame is a borderline fit for me, so I am interested in more understanding.

Thanks for your questions. I will begin to answering them.. Seat tube is an uncommon size, true and I think it could be a clue as to what type of tubing was used ( right? ) and what echelon this Grandis frame is... or even if it is a Grandis.. Did Grandis ever build any frames w/o Campy drop outs?
I have had a few doubters cast questions in my mind recently, so I lowered the price considerably.
Was under the impression this might be one of their lower-level builds....
... if they ever produced such frames, anyone?
No front braze-on, nor are there any seat tube water bottle bosses.
I don't have the seat bolt anymore, no drop out screws either, but they can be found pretty easily.
I will get the seat tube angle I have the tool here somewhere, from when I set the rear swing arms on my car (!)
