Road bikes made in the 1970's and 1980's tended to have geometry that was best suited to criterium racing. With the popularity of triathalons the geometry shifted to more road friendly bike frames with more fork rake. Starting around 2000 the use of gear shifters incorporated into the brake levers became increasingly common on new bikes and these make riding easier for novices in particular and encourages more frequent gear changes to adapt to terrain and fewer riders struggling to push a too tall gear and hurting their knees in the process. Newer bikes also have more cogs at the rear and so a wider range of gearing was possible which was great for heavy riders and weaker riders. The latest addition was disc brakes which are provided even on $300 road bikes but provide no advantages for normal use and are more of a marketing gimmick (different with tandem bikes).
