Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good grief no.

When you start at age 8 racing bikes, it's pretty much drilled in to you from day 1 not to do that. Smoke and you were off the team, no questions asked, no chance for redemption. Regardless of what your "friends" did.

That, and 10 of the last 11 people in my family that have died, did so from cancer.

Totally forgot who posted this picture of their coach:

Frankly I find the image completely offensive. What a terrible influence on young ones. I mean really what self respecting cyclist would ever read "Bicycling"

The days of running a dozen miles before a breakfast of unfiltered Camels have long passed. I miss the durability aspects of it, not the rest.

Have to admit he will be the coolest president ever.

Can't imagine how you could smoke and still bike, and that's coming from a reformed smoker. I drink my share of the brews though, so no judgments.

If I throw back a few beers and/or shots, I'll have a cigarette or three over the course of the night. But that happens maybe 3-4 times a month. And I barely consider myself a roadie.

Smoking while riding? Too much wind, I lose the ember. Unless I'm riding back from the bar, on the sidewalk, going 4 mph.

One of the nice things about doing the weeklong events is camping with a thousand people that don't smoke. Any other time I go camping there is somebody fouling the air with a cigarette.

I can understand people who smoke, but not those who smoke while riding. Looks masochistic to me.

The other day I passed three teens on 2 cruisers (one of them on the top tube). The two riding together were sharing a joint, the other one was drinking a beer from the bottle. Hilarious!

On second thought, most people I know consider masochistic to ride 200 km on a bicycle...

I'm a SMOKER - especially after a long ride and a couple recovery IPAs.

Seems forking ridiculous but it happens.

My dad used to smoke while swimming in a pool. Unfortunately he finally succumed to lung cancer. Even more silly than smoking on a bike.
