Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who rides 32 spoke wheels anymore?

I am the first to admit that I am an old fashioned thinking guy. All my wheels are 28, 32 or 36 hole traditional built up wheels. I ride centuries & other long rides when i get a chance. I am the ONLY person i know who rides on traditional wheels. I feel all alone!

No...I ride 28 and 32 traditional spoked wheels that I build myself. They are actually lighter and stronger than most anything I can buy prebuilt for under $600.

I race on a 36 h Fiamme Ergal rim with Campy NR hub from the mid '80s. It's quite light and still works great. I like the loose bearings because I can adjust them correctly & get very low rolling resistance.

36F/36R, db DT spokes, Mavic CXP33 rims, '06 (new old stock) Campagnolo Centaur hubs... I built up these myself and they are on my road bike.

Merckx has 32 spoke 3x
IRO fixed gear has 32 spoke 3x
Marin Mill Valley has 32 spoke 3x
Cannondale Rush800 is 32 spoke 3x
Co-Motion Periscope has 40 spoke wheels.

32F/32R Open Pros with 105 hubs & DT Swiss spokes. Love 'em. My 16F/20R Ritchey Deep Sections are hangin' on a hook waiting for the second frame I'll buy someday for a light weight build.

I ride traditional 32 spoke (open pro/ultegra) wheels on training rides. I think I'm the only one on my team that does this though. Most are riding Ksyriums.

Race day wheels are Bontrager Racelites. Not my first choice, but it's what came with the bike. A bit lighter and a bit more aero (with fewer spokes and bladed) than the 32 spoke wheels. A bit stiffer and more responsive as well. The training wheels are definitely more durable.

My workhorse commuter has 32 spoke wheels. Before I wore the last set out, I had 36 spoke wheels. I'm just a tick over 140 lbs. However, I would not even consider riding with such wheels on my other bikes.

I do. 32-hole Open Pro to Powertap hub. 16 spoke Ksyrium in the front, though. On my Paramount, I have 32-hole/Ultegra hubs, both front and rear.

All my bikes have 32 spoke 3x laced wheels. Spokes are double butted. I don't think I'd consider anything else.

I have 32 spoke 3-cross OpenPro/Centaur on my Gazelle. I'm thinking of trying my hand at building my own wheels this winter and I'm thinking of 28 radial for the front and 32 3-cross for the rear.

I just killed my 32 spoke Open Pro's in under a year. I'm looking to build something more sturdy - maybe 36 hole something or other.

I don't own any machine-made or low spoke-count wheels.

Both my road bikes have 32 spoke wheels
(Record laced to Ambrosio Excellight and Dura Ace laced to DT Swiss RR 1.1. 2X Front and 2X/3X Rear.)
My fixed gears have 36 spoke wheels.
(Formula laced 3X to Aeroheads and Dura Ace laced 4X to Araya 16B.)

I used to have a few machine-made wheels, but I didn't like them. (Ksyrium SL3, Shimano WH-600, Campy Neutron)

At my weight, 145lbs, I could get away with fewer spokes, but I like the comfort and security of more spokes. The weight is negligible for me.
