Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Who's Tougher, A Crab Fisherman Or A Pro Cyclist?

So, I'm sitting here watching the Tour on my DVR, catching up on the stages I missed when the Mrs. asks "who's tougher, a crab fisherman or a pro cyclist?" After I gave her one of those looks, I thought about it for a couple of seconds and had to admit that the crab fisherman was probably tougher, all things considered. I've watched some episodes of "The Dealiest Catch" and seeing what those guys go through is pretty amazing. I'm pretty sure they don't have massages after each shift, but I wonder if they dope?

Don't crab fisherman just do their job one week a year?

Tour is three weeks.

Heck no. From what I can tell, crab fisherman are out for at least 2-4 months total, between 3 seasons. Their typical trip might last 7-14 days out on the water then have a couple of days back in port unloading, then back out on the water again.

Crab fisherman takes the cake. The rate of drowning and serious injury in the fishing business is considerably higher than it is in pro cycling. Plus, as far as I know, fishermen don't get massages at the end of every day.

There's a rate of drowning for pro-cyclists?

Must be those pesky underwater cyclists..

while i'm sure very few crab fisherman could ride the alps like TdF pros, even fewer cyclists could last on a crab boat, let alone in the Bearing Sea in January with 40ft seas doing back-breaking, dangerous labor for 30 hours straight.

I'd say a cyclist.

Crab fishermen are insane, not necessarily tough.

I have doubts that most pro cyclists have the upper body strength to lift the bait into the crab pot.

i have to admit i'm addicted to deadliest catch. those guy do not get nightly massages and rest days when they feel like it. cyclists are way fitter, but for on the htfu scale, the crab guys win hands down.

Especially if they come back for more than one season. It's not uncommon to work 36 hours straight without a break on those boats. One tough job

It depends on how you define "tough."

But for the most part, I think the crab fisherman is tougher.

I wanna know what's more dangerous. The Bering Sea, or a sea of bearings?

The deadliest job is no longer crabbing, it's been replaced by cell phone tower workers. Since they are small companies, they have loopholes in safety regs.
Those crab guys seem like crazies who are looking for quick bucks. A pro cyclist has spent years of training, discipline, and denial to get to the highest level. Both are tough.
