Campy Athena Brifters to be Identified

I picked up a set of Campy Athena brifters and am puzzled why they are so hard to identify? I've dealt mostly with Shimano and they are all so clearly marked under the hoods that I am frustrated with these Campy Athena brifters!

They are silver bladed for the brake lever and under is the black plastic shift lever. They are labeled on the front of the brake lever with the Campy logo, Athena and then 4 diagonal slots. In research today I've seen these different identifiers - but none all on one brifter like this.

They are not mounted but running through the shifting it appears to shift 8 down and 9 up... I am sure that is just because there is no tension on them from the RD - but if there was tension, which are they, 8sp or 9sp?

Here are some pics:

Thank you!!

Look like 8 speed to me. I believe Athena became Daytona at the 9 speed generation, but there could have been some overlap.

I'd have to see the insert, but I'm guessing 8sp.

I checked the catalogs. This looks to be from the 1996 or 1997 Athena group. Either way, 8 speed.

Thanks for the catalogs links icepick_trotsky...

Would it have been common for the inside shifter lever to be black plastic coated instead of silver like in all the photos? I guess that is the part that really had me confused!

It is possible that they have a 9 speed cam inside of them. This was a relatively easy upgrade for first generation ergo bodies, to go from 8 to 9. Some of the later 8 can go to 10 but it gets very confusing to keep track. So hook it up to something with tension and see if you have a 9 speed cam.

Generally that's to visually distinguish the "lesser" groups' shifters from Chorus & Record. Athena may have had plastic shifters one year and not others, or they could have been swapped out at some point.
