Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Compatibility question re: Shimano Dura Ace shifters, 9-speed cog and a triple crank

I'm planning on setting up my newly acquired Paramount with a Sugino RD500 triple crank, Dura Ace 7700 9 speed cassette, a Dura Ace 7900 rear hub, a Dura Ace GS RD, and a Dura Ace 7700 triple FD. It currently has Shimano 105 triple shifters. I'd like to upgrade just the shifters. All I can seem to find in the Dura Ace line that works with the 9-speed cassette and the triple crank are Dura Ace 7703s (which are VERY hard to find). If I want to go outside the Dura Ace line, it seems that only Ultegra 6703s will work with the 9-speed cassette. Am I wrong?

Are there any other shifter options in Campy or SRAM that will work with the triple crank, FD, RD, and 9-speed cassette I have?

The 6703s are 10-speed in the rear, so that's not going to jive with your 9-speed cassette.

Neither Campy nor SRAM make triple shifters. All current-generation Shimano parts from 105 up are 10-speed. Dura Ace 7703s are indeed hard to find, I believe they were out of production for 5 years or more. Ultegra 6703's are also 10-speed. You might stand a better chance of finding older (used) 105-5500 or Ultegra-6500 shifters. Or you can do a mix & match and get an older 9-speed right shifter and a newer left triple shifter.

What kind of shifters will you be going with? Brifters, bar ends, or down tube? I have the downtube Dura Ace 7700 on one bike, it's micro-friction and has the pull to shift either double or triple front derailleurs. Bar ends operate similarly, but I think the brifter mech is specialised for double or triple FD operation.

If you're going to use Dura Ace derailleurs and a Shimano 9 speed cassette, you should use Shimano shifters. For 9 speed your choices are 7700 Dura Ace series, 6500 Ultegra series, 5500 105 series, 4500 Tiagra series, or 3400 (?) Sora series. You can't use SRAM because the derailleur pull ratio is different, and I think the Campy has slightly differently spaced cogs in their 9 speed cassette (there goes "neutral" service).

I think you have a number of triple crank options available too, your only limit is what bottom bracket mechanism can be mounted in your Paramount's frame shell, which needs to be determined if you plan on an upgrade - like to Shimano Octalink V1 if you plan to run one of their (105 Ultegra or DA) 9 speed triple cranks. As if it wasn't already confusing enough, the more recent 9 speed Tiagra and Sora cranks use the Hollowtech II bottom brackets. Is the Sugino RD500 you're thinking of a standard JIS square taper?

Your troubles stem from the fact that you want to run the 3x9 gear configuration, which is quite a bit off-spec by modern road-bike standards. Parts would be easier to come by, and your life would be easier, if you were to go 3x10, or better yet 2x10. Any specific reason why you want a 9-speed cassette?

Campy 11 speed apparently works well with Shimano 9. You can get Athena 11 at Ribble for about $150. You can get Dura Ace bar end shifters, 9 speed, for $75.

Campy11 shifters will shift a Shimano 9 drivetrain perfectly. I don't think there would be any issue with a triple on the front either, but I use a double.

Does anyone know if a Shimano Tiagra FD will work with Sram brifters? I'm currently upgrading my bike. Right now I have full Shimano Tiagra 9 speed. I already have the Sram brifters. Still need to get the cassette, chain, and RD. It should work with just these components, right?
