I want geofenced speed limiting on cars first. Why give drivers any excuse to drive faster?

It always amazes me that we can build smart cars that can drive themselves, but we can’t have smart stoplights that detect a bicyclist and change to green to allow me to cross legally.

The technology of the "self driving car" will, I predict, come down to communication between vehicles. The current group of 'self driving' cars relies on sensors to basically avoid collisions and stay on the road. There are, however, exceptions that are clearly described in the owners manual (you know, that big, thick book in the glovebox that no one ever reads?) that will tell you when your 'self driving' car won't work. There are a lot of them, believe me. Until all cars are equipped with vehicle to vehicle communication and self driving technologies, there will always be that one idiot driver that thinks they can drive at 120 MPH and the car will prevent them from crashing. When cars 'talk' to each other to communicate their positions, speed, intended path, and (most importantly) take the human completely out of the equation, then the roads - and 'self driving' cars - will be safer.

Actually, I'm pretty sure we don't build cars that actually drive themselves. Smart, yes, but not general self-driving
