On This Day in 1889

John Jacob Astor IV, one of the wealthiest men in the world and League of American Wheelmen member, patented a bicycle brake. He would later perish aboard the Titanic.

Not long after, William T. Noodler invented but did not patent a bicycle break. It has been used without restriction ever since.

No, after the derailleurs sell out it will be a 19mm block chain fixed gear array.

I've had several bicycles break. I wish he'd obtained and enforced that patent to keep those breaks out of my hands.
