My co-op has many normandy hubs, none 40, plenty of 36

I've only read about Normandy hubs with 40 hole flanges, never seen one in person. I think I have a few sets worth of 36 hole hubs, one of them built and ridden as often as possible, but that bike will see a more "restoration worthy" wheelset built with Airlite Continentals. If it's for a British bike, you'll no doubt find 10 full 32h/40h sets of Airlites, Racelites, Hardens, for every 40 hole Normandy. Will Pelissier, Atom, Schwinn labeled hubs also work for your build? I'll keep my eyes open.

Thanks, Robert and Phil this set of high-flange Normandies came (original, I believe) on a 1957 Raleigh Lenton Grand Prix that i recently acquired, laced to near-mint Dunlop Special Lightweights. The front hub is just fine, but the rear hub came without an axle. I threw it out, and the dork disc and seized, rusted Shimano 333 freewheel with it. Thanks for the context on these hubs. Yeah, none to be seen right now in the most likely market places. If I can't find one, I'll probably end up with something British and 114 o.l.d. Paul

The Sturmey Archer high flange 40 hole freewheel hub is not quite identical, but would absolutely be correct for your build. They aren't uncommon and since they are Sturmey, they often get overlooked by flippers, so they sell for very little. I have a front SA high flange which I paid $6 for and a never been laced matching rear high flange which cost a whooping $29. The SA rear freewheel hub comes with a long enough axle to space to 120mm but I think is natively spaced at about 115mm.
If you want an alloy hub shell that is one piece, the 40 hole Racelite would be perfect and would match the appearance of the Normandy front. They shine up at least as nicely as the Normandy.

Thanks. I have no problem with various British (aluminum,steel or steel/aluminum), and I have low-flange Sturmey/Archer front and rear (91mm/110mm), laced to Wolbers on the Manufrance (how often do you see British hubs on a French bike?) I have an offer in my P.M's for a 40H Normandy, but in case it does not work out, what are your plans for the Sturmey/Archer?

note that these older high flange Normandy hubs came in both round hole and eliptical hole versions, I have both types, circa 1960-62.

Yes, you are right. I found that out when Nwvlvtnr offered me an eliptical-hole version. My Lenton Grand Prix is a 1958, like yours, not 1957, as I had thought. Here is a photo of the front hub:

I have a 40 spoke rear hub shell and races with the round holes. It came on my 66 Raleigh Carlton and in my teen years I borrowed its innards when I built tubular wheels for the bike. It is filthy and I don't know that it would be usable even if you found innards for it. I could send it on for the price of shipping if you are interested.

Yeah, that's how my hub came to me, but attached to a very rusty Shimano freewheel that wouldn't even spin. I imagine that the previous (original) owner removed the axle to try some alternate methods of freewheel removal. Let me hear what evwxxx has to say, and I'll get back to you. I know at least some of the Schwinn Voyageurs used a 40-hole Normandy rear hub, but I seem to recall it was low flange.
