How many cycle with their in laws (or to be)?
Yesterday I went for a ride with my girlfriend's (one day wife - hopefully) father. I believe I get along better with her father than she has in the past, however cycling is a fairly strong bonding opportunity which both her father and I happen to live the life style. I was wondering how many other BF'ers ride with their folks in laws and if so, is it because You enjoy it, they enjoy it, both, or (hey its something to do)?

Biker395 is my wife's uncle. I spend time with him because of a shared interest, but it's great to be able to bond with my other half's family as well. It made me feel like part of their family before I even was. Now, it causes all sorts of groans in the family at get-togethers because the two of us invariably turn the conversation toward cycling 
In your situation, it sounds like a great opportunity to bond. As long as you don't say something that would be offensive or concerning (avoid those cat calls at female runners, and don't mock anything his family does), it will win his favor before you even propose.

I have ridden with my father-in-law a few times, but I don't think any just the two of us. He has joined us for group rides and family rides several times though. He even keeps a second bike in our garage so he doesnt have to haul his over to ride.

My aunt-in-law was an avid cyclist and dabbled in triathlons. She stopped cycling because of health issues, but is now starting again and commuting to work. We live too far apart to ride together though.

The reason you get along better with her dad is you don't have the baggage of an entire life and he's not responsible for you. He's not going to be a buddy to his daughter, that's just weird. Enjoy.

As far as the cat calling and such, there is no need for that. Wandering eyes can cause enough trouble in relationships
your son has got to be getting big already. (They grow fast don't they?) My best friends had a baby around the same time.

I'm riding a 540km one-day event with my brother in-law in June, so yes we tend to ride a lot together during the year. 
As for my father in-law, he has a bike but he just doesn't manage to keep up with anyone of the family.

I have a brother in-law who got me into cycling a few years ago. He and his brother were crit racers in the early 90s but just ride for fitness these days. I have yet to ride with him since he lives at a distance. Planning on some rides and maybe a couple century events this spring/summer.

my father in law was actually the one that got me into cycling. he even gave me my first bike. before that we talked but not really talked you know.. he was a cat 2 racer when he was young, owned a bike shop in our area, and hosted a lot of the races locally and still helps with most. ive learned a lot from him and im greatful to have married into a family i get along and share intrests with. it took me a while before i could actually ride with him and not get totally droped but now we ride together all the time. heck im even working as a bike mechanic now and i know that with out all the knowledge he has shared with me over the years i wouldnt be.

My Father in law got me into cycling a couple of years ago. He lost about 100 pounds from cycling, and I wanted to cut some weight, so I started riding his spare hybrid bike with him.
I now have my own bike, and we ride together 2-4 times a week. It's great way to get away from the woman!

When we vacation with the in-laws my father in law always has me bring an extra bike so he can ride in FL. I always feel a bit goofy riding with him, me in full kit, him in jean shorts and a ball cap.

You can't everybody's heart all the time. But the girls father/mother/siblings are very important to get along with, I think anyways. But it works both ways. As I said in OP, I think my girl gets a little put off with the fact her father and I get along so well, but at the same rate, she understands it is far better than the alternative.

I went with my father-in-law once. Long story short, he's an idiot on the bike and doesn't know how to properly ride with others. We were taking off at a busy intersection, he can't get clipped in, swerves over in front of me (I'm already clipped in by this time), and his back wheel takes out my front wheel. I can't unclip in time and down I go in the middle of the road. Nothing serious except for some cuts/scrapes. That's the only time (knock wood) I've been down when riding. A little more background -he's put 4 people in the hospital from cycling-related "incidents" such as the one I experienced with him. When my wife heard the story she gave me the "I told you so" (she didn't want me to go out with him to begin with). The funniest part was right after it happened. He goes to me "Please don't tell your wife; she'll kill me". I think after that we have an unwritten agreement never to ride together again. I'm ok with it.
