Helmets were optional on climbing stages in 2004, worn all the time in 2005.

Never followed the stuff much but, I always liked the way BH looked on a bike.
He looked like…well..his nickname was perfectly chosen.

Hinault is a savvy man. He reminds me of Muhammad Ali who was a genius when it came to creating hype for an event. I think some of what the Badger did was to create drama and interest for the race. Otherwise it would have been a long and boring show of pure dominance. The two best riders in the tour on the same team didn't have much competition, except each other. The young and naive LeMond looked stunned half the time, angry and emotional the other half. Perfect for the role.

Highgear and OldsCOOL... thanks for the clarification. Just threw me for a loop when I saw the brace.

If you C&V fans enjoyed 'Slaying', follow up and read the excellent chapters in Greg LeMond's Complete Book of Bicycling circa '87. Go back in time and while it was written fresh in LeMond's memory.

La Vie Claire director sportif Paul Kochli did not come off very well, but one of my favorite parts was his quote: "You can suffer as much as you want. If you do the wrong thing at the wrong time, you will never win the race. You cannot compensate for your stupidness [sic] by suffering more. First you must begin to do the right thing at the right moment. That's the art of cycling."

They snuck Slaying the Badger onto ABC this afternoon as "30 for 30" without any information on the content.
I just stumbled on it half way through, and it is great - slightly different than the book, but the video and interviews are FANTASTIC.
So, having missed the first half I went google-sniping and found it on YouTube.
