Helmets were optional on climbing stages in 2004, worn all the time in 2005.

Never followed the stuff much but, I always liked the way BH looked on a bike.
He looked like…well..his nickname was perfectly chosen.

Hinault is a savvy man. He reminds me of Muhammad Ali who was a genius when it came to creating hype for an event. I think some of what the Badger did was to create drama and interest for the race. Otherwise it would have been a long and boring show of pure dominance. The two best riders in the tour on the same team didn't have much competition, except each other. The young and naive LeMond looked stunned half the time, angry and emotional the other half. Perfect for the role.

Highgear and OldsCOOL... thanks for the clarification. Just threw me for a loop when I saw the brace.

If you C&V fans enjoyed 'Slaying', follow up and read the excellent chapters in Greg LeMond's Complete Book of Bicycling circa '87. Go back in time and while it was written fresh in LeMond's memory.

that, i did not see.

i did though see a man that trusted a 'friend,' and was let down. i also saw a winner who overcame this.

Yeah, he was quite a character. I'm actually surprised he allowed himself to be interviewed because he comes across as a pretty slimy schemer. He, Hinault, and Tapii are all pieces of work, but at least Hinault could ride the hell out of a bike. Tumbling down the mountainside (sans helmet) and climbing back up and on the bike to win the stage, and finishing another with a bloody face. Dude was the real thing. It would have been interesting if he and LeMond had been on different teams so both could have gone for a full on performance without the drama. Could he have won a 6th Tour had he had a full team support? Quite probably. But the drama sure made a cracking story.

I just stumbled on it half way through, and it is great - slightly different than the book, but the video and interviews are FANTASTIC.
So, having missed the first half I went google-sniping and found it on YouTube.
Thanks for posting that, Chuck! I enjoyed it.
