Woops yes I definitely agree purchase Shimano. They are very reasonably priced... don't buy knockoffs.

This gadget lets you fit a 34.9 MTB front shifter to a 28.6 seat tube then adjust the position to match the chainline. It would help you to get an MTB indexed front shifter to work. The inner and outer positions can be adjusted with the stop screws but the center position needs to be just right to avoid chain rub.

Thanks for posting. I have not seen one of those before. That was the reason for my comment above in post number 14 where I said:
Getting a front shifter that is indexed for a triple crank and works well on your hardware is likely not going to happen, so the front shifter will probably have to be friction. I suspect you already knew that.
A device like that will not always solve mis-matched crank, derailleur, and shifter, but it certainly can reduce the chance for problems.

Unfortunately, since Brexit, shipping costs from SJS to USA have risen dramatically. I have two Thorn bikes, so I speak from experience on that, have placed several orders from SJS.

just search for "front derailluer shim" on the googles, first result is amazon with 64 ads like this one for 8 bucks

This bumps you up to 10 speed but SL-R780 and BL-R780 make for a great combo.

The first one is just a shim for size, the other one that was cited was non-concentric, you could turn the shim on the seat tube to adjust how far out your derailleur will be. Thus, if you found that your derailleur cage on the middle ring needed to be shifted in or out for indexing purposes, you could adjust that derailleur position in or out. It would be a time consuming adjustment, but it could be done.

On my triple cranks on the bikes I built up, I am running front derailleurs for double cranks, as I never had very good luck finding a triple derailleur that had the right cage shape for the chain rings. I did experiment with a few front derailleurs that used the clamp similar to the second link you posted, but was not very happy with the specific derailleurs. When I first built up my rando bike, I used one of those clamps. (I built it up in winter, thus the snowy background.)



That is a Campy road triple with stock chainrings (52/42/30). Later I got a Campy triple derailleur which worked worse, it was sized for more recent triple chainrings (50/39/30).

I have given up trying to find the perfect front derailleur for that bike, use a friction shifter. A vintage Huret.



I do not have a photo handy of the current front derailleur, it is a FSA for a bigger size seat tube, use a shim for it that I made from 1/16 inch thick aluminum.
