Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"Winning" on Ebay: The Spite Bid

just "won" some fsa carbon handlebars for under $90.

great deal on them, but i didnt need them yet.

increased my bid out of spite, and the other guy apparently did not want to
spend $1 over a certain price point. meh.

now i need to sell my 42 fsa compact wing pros. heres to hoping someone on craigslist
picks them up...guess i wont "spite" bid anymore. but he just kept upping my bid by one dollar...probably the seller's friend or alt account.

Do you ever consider you might be living in your own world and that other people (like your ebay 'opponent') may barely be aware of your existence?

I don't even know what a titanium hammer would be used for. It was just the first pic that came up on my google image search.

If you're placing a bid any sooner than the last 3 or 4 seconds of the auction, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

FSA carbon for <$90? Which model was it? New or used? Whatever it is, you got a great deal.

I bid at the last second and I bid exactly the point where I would hate myself if I paid $1 more. If anyone outbids me, I am happy for them

Common belief was that the heavier the hammer, the better. So framing hammers used to be big, heavy affairs. Then someone realized that the energy driving the nail is proportional to mass x the square of the velocity. They realized it's better to swing a lighter hammer faster. It's freakin' amazing, frankly.

I don't frame. I did install new windows on my house last summer and used an electric hammer. That was freakin' amazing.

Then it's a blind bid. The 'loser' is the seller who misses out on the spite bid escalation. But by using it, I can have my bid entered at the last second and don't have be online. It also removes the temptation to over bid. I won a new cassette today with snipe bid while I was out riding. I love that.

I'll toss in my max bid and walk away. If I win at the price I want, great; if someone else wins, they wanted to pay more for it. Good on them, even if it's only by $1. If I wanted it that bad, I would have set my max bid higher.

OP played the sucka's auction game and lost.

I just paid $150. on eBay for a 20 year old saw when I could've gotten the exact model brand new for $135./shipped.

Why? Because the new one is Made in China and the 20 year old saw is Made in The USA.
The new ones have issues, the old ones last for decades and are prized among tradesmen.
I picked mine up in practically new condition. Opened it up and it was gleaming. Score.

If one could find a brand new USA Made HD77, it's worth anywhere from $275.-$300.
Beat-up well worn Craigslist finds go for $75.-$100. easy. Mine was worth $200.
I got into a bidding war and maxed my bid out 4 seconds before bidding ended.
I couldn't believe I won it so cheap. This was juicy considering that I lost a bidding
war on an antique slate hammer that was near mint even though I outbid the winner
by 50% (eBay f'd up and when I upped my bid, signed me out of my account).

But this makes up for it big time.

They weigh half of the average weight of a hammer. As a Roofer, I'd swing a hammer 10,000 times a day. I lifted almost 2 pounds that many times. Now, if I'm only lifting half that weight, how much difference does that make at the end of the day? Not to mention that it makes a noticeable difference when you've lost a pound of weight off of your tool belt.

Also, the Ti hammer's properties send more of the strike's energy & impact into the nail and not back towards the user's arm. Major shock reduction. Think of it as what a carbon for does to smooth out a road.

That pic is about 4 years old when I had just ordered that Oxy belt.
(that's just what I had in my apartment that day)
I was just starting to put together my carpentry tools.
Define "poser" (with that particular set-up)?
