I had these Sampson pedals. The cleats made it impossible to walk in your bike shoes. I went to LOOK pedals, and still ride Deltas on most road bikes, but two bolt Shimano SPD pedals have proven to be the universal standard for me.

Tried them for a couple months in 1990. Tough to clip in, damn near impossible to put a foot down at a stoplight. I was very happy to switch to Shimano SPD (mountain style) a couple months later.

These were my first clipless pedals as well. I recall them being difficult to walk around in, but having nothing else to compare them to, it didn't really bother me. I probably used them for a couple years before switching to Looks. I have a pair of Stratics in the pedal drawer. I might try and figure out some way to 3D print some cleat covers. I've heard they're no fun to walk in either.
In fact, Looks weren't a joy to walk in either, but they were popular enough that it made sense for Look to produce cleat covers. I imagine the tooling costs for a smaller company like Sampson would have been relatively high.
