Franco-Suisse to International

Doe anybody know the relation between the Carlton Franco-Suisse and the Raleigh International? The later CFS frames look almost identical to the RI. Did the CFS just become the RI, and if so, when? I have read Peter Kohler's great article about the early 60's Carlton's, but there's not much on the later ones.

Raleigh Industries of America was the US-based importer of the British-built product. While there were some bikes in the later sixties imported that were simultaneously branded "Carlton" (downtube decal) and "Raleigh" (headbadge), I suspect for the purposes of brand unity they specified the Raleigh International as we know it for the US market. Carlton also marketed models called "International", early ones were up-market and had very ornate lugs and the ones in the '70s looked more like the bike we know as the Raleigh Grand Prix.

Also keep in mind that before the Raleigh International appeared in US brochures in the beginning of the '70s, there was a version of the "Competition" with chromed Nervex Pro lugs, 531DB tubing and chrome socks front and rear.

My 1962 Carlton Franco-Suisse matches your lug, tubing, and chrome description of the Raleigh Competition I'll have to ask the gang on the Carlton owner's channel.
