Be careful you do not make it look too nice.
When I went to college, a friend had a child's bike, 20 inch wheels, very rusty. He did not even lock it up, nobody stole if for his freshman year. Then, tire blew. He put a new tire on it and continued to not lock it, the tire gave it value, was stolen within a week.

It's much more satisfying and enjoyable to take care of a nice bike that I can take with me anywhere.
