When I went to college, a friend had a child's bike, 20 inch wheels, very rusty. He did not even lock it up, nobody stole if for his freshman year. Then, tire blew. He put a new tire on it and continued to not lock it, the tire gave it value, was stolen within a week.
This is exactly why, almost 21 years ago, I got my first folding bike so I could legally take it on the train. I had considered locking a beater to a parking meter or some place downtown, but I would have to eventually put a new tire or chain or something else on it... and eventually it wouldn't be a beater. And apart from theft, there's also the possibility of vandalism.
It's much more satisfying and enjoyable to take care of a nice bike that I can take with me anywhere.
