Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The appearance of impropriety.

A long way. Across the mainland and across the gulf. Prolly three hours by air, as a guess.
Maybe a little less. I don’t know how far north that is. Hour and a half to CDMX.

Man, I get stuck in Mexico, and the one person I know down here is on the wrong part of the country.

Sorry. If you’re ever stuck in Merida, it’s a hop and a skip.

I took the 414 out today, as a shakedown for Monday’s near metric. A surprisingly sublime ride. Must be those 32mm Gatorskins front and rear. I’m going to a colectivo farm to buy some honey and maybe some other delights. The 414 has a rack, and currently sports ye olde Cannondale panniers.
Rain was due at precisely 5. It arrived at precisely 4:30, moments after I entered the house.

Windy here this morning. Drove to the club ride start and it was so windy I almost got back in the car to go back home but some friends were there so I decided to give it a go. Only 8 of us but we decided to wing it and ride to the east to avoid the worst of the gusts. Turned out to be a good choice and we went to a popular coffee stop and there was another group there and I got to see some friends I haven't seen in a while.

After some handshaking and back slapping they left and we saw riders we knew in 2 other groups. Seems a lot of riders have figured out where to go when it's windy.
Happy how it turned out and we never actually had to go directly into the wind.

The perks of living your whole life in the same neighborhood. I envy that, but there was no way I would have been able to stay around where I grew up. Northeast Ohio, on the edge of Amish country. A wonderful place to grow up, though.

This spring it's 35 years riding with this club and about 40 riding around SoCal. I often see people I know when out riding and since I stick out like a sore thumb people often yell my name when riding the opposite direction.

Fun fact: In the first sequel, there is a filming gaffe. The film is set in the D.C. airport, but a bank of pay phones read “Pacific Bell.”

In early November I ordered a chainring for the mtb. Had trouble finding one and a shop on-line said they had it in stock. I called them after weeks and the guy said the didn't really have it in stock but it was due in tomorrow and he would get it right out to me. He didn't so I called back later and got the same story. OK, I can wait. Eventually I called and asked for a refund after I was told since it was a small order they didn't really care. I think this all took over a month.

Finally someone from FSA called me and said they expected a shipment of rings soon and he would try to get one for me even though they were spoken for,, otherwise it would probably be April before I could get one. This was Jan 2.

This Thursday I again went online and after searching by part number I found a place that said they had one on about page 5 of searches. I ordered it and it showed up today. Damn. I guess now I have to buy a chain and cassette.

I don’t know too many riders around here, but most of the people I ride with live nearby and I end up seeing a lot of people I know on the road or commuting to work. It’s a fantastic feeling and one I didn’t have here until the last few years.
