Look Ergostem?
I sometimes think about paying up for an Ergostem, so that I can really fine tune my fit.
What do you think about them? How long are they, at full extension? Are they solid, or wobbly? Any tips on buying and picking?. Do you think they are horrid looking?

Not the best looking stem out there (Ok, I'll just say it, they are quite fugly looking stems....), but I suspect the functionality/flexibility will be much appreciated by many that use them.....
That's a good question about how stiff they are, considering the joints on the stem.

One idea is to fine tune your fit using an ugly, cheap theadless adjustable stem (with a quill adapter if applicable / need be) and then plunk down your cash on a nice fixed stem once you know for sure what you need / want.

its awesome- over the top and I love it. that is the sort of bike that can get away with a ergostem, because its so far out.. there is no holding it back - it can do anything it wants.
that bike says: "I don't care about you, F&*& you."

It's the Mavic Starfish that ties it all together.

off-tracked the topic a bit I am afraid. aside from all that I have heard good things about the ergostem - big complaint has always been how it looks. if you like it then who cares what other people think.
this guy has one:

If we don't care how it looks then we'll most likely won't mind having the notorious "limp dick" stems on some of our cherished C&V bikes then....
Remember, jyl did ask us what we think about its looks....

I agree, but he asked a lot of other things as well and we (including me starting it) went straight to how it looks and didn't supply any other information. my advice is don't worry what others think- if you don't mind then who cares. I'd rock one if I could afford one.

I did some research, seems like these are 150 or 160 mm at full horizontal extension.
Maybe, visually, an Ergostem will match the Look Ergopost on my Vitus.
I suppose I could get it set, then slip a section of inner tube over it.

The Look 196 was a revolutionary bike and the precursor for many modern frame designs. The ergostem was very much part of the package. I had a 196 and, if I recall correctly, the ergostem was specifically designed for the 196 and I'm not sure it would fit a typical road bike.

Not quite a zombie thread, so maybe this is a comatose or moribund thread alert.
I received a Look Ergostem in the usual "Here, you can have this too" situation when buying some guy's bike.
However, he didn't have an instruction manual for it, nor did he know how to interpret the setting numerals stamped around the first segment (A-B side) of the stem.
It was like talking to Sgt Schultz.
My questions:
1. Do the "settings" (numerals on the first segment matched with the lines scored into the quill body and the second segment) provide an angle and length measurement, directly or indirectly by table?
2. Are there two acceptable quill positions in the steerer? Quill body behind and quill body forward of the quill, or just one of those?
Essentially I'm hoping for an explanation at worst, or a fellow BF member to send me a pdf copy of his/her manual at best.
Driveside photo 1 (first extension link rightside up; quill body behind quill; settings visible)
Driveside photo 2 (first extension link upside down; quill body in front of quill; settings now on non-drive side not visible)
