I had to change the front wheel on our tandem and I used a tubeless tire that had about a 1/4" slit in the bead fro what. I think was too low of psi riding and it would not seal so I figured it would work with a tube. we ran over a rock or leaf or something that stuck to the wheel a bit and when I look down it looked weird and I saw the first pic. well we were only 2 blocks from my work shop and I had the tires I used when we were running tubes there. so I change the tire out this time maybe 50 hundred miles its a marathon plus with a wire bead. change it pump it to 60 irate rated too 8 and ride on. coming back I look down and I see the tire coming out of the rim it actually looked like a fold in the bead. the second pic was after I stopped pushed the bead back in and refilled the tire. I left the time home we got home with some vertical movement. I tried reseating the tire several times anti always come out on the same place on the tire. Could not find any damage or feel any damage to the tire.

that's scary. you lose a front tire on a tandem and it's likely to result in something bad happening.

it was a pretty small cut so I figured it should be fine for a little bit till the other wheel was fixed. most sealants can handle bigger cuts then that.

Ya the second time started doing it we were about 2 miles from home so I put only 40psi in and went slow. but no clue why it did it I could not find anything wrong with it. Schwalbe marathons are tough tires. the wire is pretty stiff too but it was popping out like crazy. the first tire had the slid when we were 30 miles away from home I put a tube in it and it was fine. so why would I expect it to do this?

i've seen that failure on Schwalbe Marathons before.. i Quit trying them on wheels a few years ago... you should too.

too many bad bead seatings, they ride like concrete, hard to mount/dismount, and the sidewalls fail in spectacular fashion, ruining tubes,.

on the other hand, i see them for free quite often!
IMO, Not worth the price.

it was a first for me but they are why I went to tubeless starting on our tandem. but they were all that wouldn't get flats for us when running tubes. Now they were just backups in a case like this.
go to put another tie we used to use but was too large with the new rims on tube got a hole in it must have pinched it. second one already had a hole in it. thread one was the charm but then found the wheel was too large to fit under our new fender. so I took the wheel off my backup bike changed the rotor as the tandem is 203 and went shopping.

I wonder if there's a correlation between someone using a bead jack on that tyre and that specific failure

I use a bead jack. but this tire was fine til lI took it off. I have used maybe 4 to 6 of them without this happening.

I've seen this damage before on tight tyres, and I was 99% sure it was bead jack damage. The damage was most likely done the very first time it was jacked on and it just took a few miles and inflation/deflation cycles

torn casings, broken beads from rust.. maybe.

i've seen some with bent bead wires too.... and the breaks are typically rusted heavily.
someone cut corners on materials at the factory..?

maybe they're 700c x 32 Firestones! they're "all season"... hmmmmmm...

Not arguing tyres can fail for many reasons, just that specific square tear...

Ok I checked the first tire and no slit it looks like the sidewall was separating. maybe it was from whatever we ran over and stuck to the tire.
