I was in the shop right before you left. Not long after you guys went I started planning my first tour.

Was it a smooth tour through Mexico?

Went for a ride on my other bike my 'old' Trek 520. Still a fantastic bike, even when compared to the Thorn.

For last summer's Gulf Island ride here's my Bianchi MTB disguising its self as a tour bike. BTW I just replaced it with a proper tour bike an LHT and will have another loaded tour photo to add this summer.

BTW these packs have been borrowed from friends from my LBS for the last two years but because they just went on "permenant" tour, I ordered myself the light weight plus line of the Ortliebs... can't wait!

Schwalbe Marathons are available in reflective sidewall. I also have Cheng Shins and Michelins that have the same feature.

Not technically "fully loaded" yet. But I had just installed my tubus tara and my handlebar bag so I figured i'd put my ortliebs on it and take a pic. Still need to install the rear fender, for some reason I was having trouble with it and ran out of time. So I'm thinking of adding some white bar tape before the cross country trip this summer. yay or nay?

And no, this isnt the same picture as the Randonee a couple posts prior. Although theres many similarities, my first response was "hey, who put a picture of my bike up here??"

Nay - white bar tape on tour = dirtybrowngrey bar tape. can't wash your gloves enough, eating on the bike, side of the road repairs with no way to wash up afterwards, leaning it against picnic tables & fences and buildings.... save the white for your roadie.

I know that Brooks recommends tilting the saddle upwards a bit, I think that might be a little too much though.

Love to see your Eclipse panniers the same ones that I used in the late 70's thru early 80's for road touring. Great designs and performance.
Your Proteus frame reminds me of a 68cm Bruce Gordon frame that I found at Bud's Bike Shop in Claremont, California for a friend of mine in 1975. He could not make the BG flex as he had done with his old frames with his 250# on a 6 ft. 7 in body.

Interesting bike w/ flick stand. I hear disparaging remarks about them (flick stands), but back in the day I had one and thought it was a great idea.

We're So hot it Hurts

1981 Specialized Expedition - 1983 Trek 620
On our trip around the pacific Northwest. We started in Seattle, went south around the Olympic Peninsula and then north through the mountains and around van couver island, through the san juans back to seattle.

dzeccola,

I live on Orcas Island in the San Juans and bike on Vancouver Is often. It's a beautiful island along with the Gulf Islands as well. I'll be doing the Discovery Islands this summer and am already planning the trip. I ache to get up there to ride and see family and old friends.

How long did it take you to do your PNW tour and did you go around all of Vancouver Island?

Cool bikes btw.

Cheers!

Hey! Yeah the PNW is awesome. Our trip took us about 2.5 weeks in the saddle and we averaged a little over 65 miles a day. We didn't go around all of Van Couver Island, we started at Victoria, went up to Sidney, then took the ferry to Salt Spring Island, across the island to the mainland, then up the coast towards Nanaimo, then we tacked inland and eventually bike through the interior to Port Alberni where we caught a 4 hour ferry ride through the fjord to get to Uclulet, where we bike up and down the pacific rim for a couple of days before retracing our steps back to Sidney and then hitching a ferry to anacortez.

Here's my new bluish surly friend. This replaced my 1980's fuji which I had a hard time leaving behind. New things are really a PITA when you get older and less excited about change for the sake of it. I went ahead and replaced the panniers also - my old ones were leaking and two repeated nights in a wet bag made that an easier decision to make.

This will get the idea across. Folks - this is the view out here all 360 degrees, in some places. Its a very lonely feeling sometimes. Like livin' on a brown island in the sky. Enjoy.

A poor man's set up, fully loaded. That's all I need.

From the side. The plastic containers are empty now but will usually contain food or electronic toys. The empty space in each metal side basket will also contain a 2 litre jug of water. My sleeping bag and tent are on it, it's a simple 6x5 walmart tent but it's all I need.

rear view. All the clothes I need are in the yellow bag. The red bag on the right are my repair tools. I also have an extra rainfly that can be used for all sorts of things. The plastic red cooler in the center is usually reserved for food.

Notice how the front light doubles as a GPS holder?? The little front bag is all I need, I carry stuff I will use often like a camera, PDA device, radio, medicines, and small stuff.
