campy zero pos. 10sp bar end shifters: should they click both ways?

After years of waiting, I'm finally repairing/upgrading my wife's campy 10 speed old-school bar end shifters with the last generation of 10sp bar end shifter they made, the so-called "zero position" ones that always return to the same position.

Stupid old bike mechanic that I am, I didn't bother to read the instructions, which are emphatic about NOT disassembling the lever mechanism. I did it anyway, realized my mistake, and tried to figure out how to to reset everything correctly. I believe I worked it out, and things are all shifting nicely.

However, it only clicks when shifting up (to a higher gear), not when shifting down (to a lower gear).

Does anyone know if this the intended behavior, or did I totally bork the shifters?
