I figured this was coming soon. Didn't discover planetcyclery till about 8 years ago and ended up buy a lot from them, always seem to have decent prices in general and some good sale items. But I noticed around the same time they seemed to be openly linked to colorado cyclist the amount of things they had went down and there seemed to be less new stuff coming in. Once the two sites mirrored each other for what was available and there still seemed to be less I figured someone was killing them both.

When I was racing back in the early 90's, any time we did a race in Ohio was a special one. We planned it so that we would stop off first at the Nashbar outlet store on the way to our race destination. We would have the catalog in hand & already decided what we were going to get but when you got there it was like to going to a candy store & everything on your list would get thrown out the window.
There were just amazing deals to be found everywhere. I remember that every time we stopped there, we would easily spend several hundred dollars. But for that amount, it was incredible how much you would get in return. On one trip, I picked up enough tires to last me me 6 seasons of riding before I had to buy tires again. No kidding. When Nashbar sold the company, it just wasn't the same.
Before the internet, all orders were placed by phone. My first serious road bike was from CC. I've ordered tons of stuff from them over the years but it was all done by phone. But with the internet, increased competition has come from all fronts that has made it difficult for these companies to thrive in this new arena. Very sad indeed.

Being of modest take-home income for most of my life, and having the ability to work on my own stuff, sales at mail-order vendors and LBSs made up most of my cycling expenditures for decades. Starting with Bike Warehouse / Nashbar and Cyclo-Pedia just out of high school in the early 80s, I was able to buy & build racing and touring wheels, and buy affordable CyclePro tubulars and Specialized tires. My current main bike still has cartridge bearing hubs from Performance and Nashbar-sourced DT spokes. Over 15 years ago, Nashbar had a blowout sale on KMC Z 7-8 speed chains for $6, and I bought a pile of them. Still have one left.
We also had a local bicycle shop (Tempe Bicycle) which had wholesale purchasing habits that could be best described as "eclectic", and twice a year they would have a half-price sale on parts & accessories. That's where I got my teal Jandd panniers, a plethora of bells & squeaky horns, some great SunRace derailleurs, Suntour freewheels, piles of tires, and countless more stuff. Alas, that shop has closed down, and I miss Yvonne (and even Bud sometimes).
Mr. Bezos has built a platform which offers unprecedented convenience, but the prices just aren't what they used to be (generally low, but almost no "bargains"). eBay is still around and great for hard-to-find or oddball items (I still have current searches for "SpinSkins" and "Blackburn aero bar bag"), and my eBay-sourced bicycle aloha shirt collection is fun. It used to be that eBay was a good source for affordable spokes, but not so much anymore. I miss Nashbar's selection of DT and Wheelsmith spokes, and their non-stratospheric prices...

They definitely have stuff on sale. I just bought a new Maxxis Dissector 2.4 maxx terra tire for $39.....probably the best deals on the site are maxxis. The other stuff, you kinda have to sift thru to find the nuggets.

that’s too bad - BITD their glossy catalog was bike porn. I bought my first Litespeed frameset (‘98) and custom wheelset from them, plus any number of components for my first decent bike build.
