Trek District Single Speed Carbon Belt with Issues..Buy or Pass
Yes, I know, another bike. This one I went out to look at. Originally talked about buying it for $150 but it is not 100% as advertised. It's a cool to me unique bike but the front tire is dry rotted. So that's $50. Probably should replace tubes...another $10. The wheels are slightly out of true but I can live with that. The final issue is that there is a good amount of side to side play in the left crank which concerns me. I tried to tighten it but could not. Here are pics that I took.....
Oh yeah and the front wheel is on backwards and seems to be further on one side than the other.
I have video of the side to side play of the crank but I think you know what I mean. So what's it worth? Or should I walk.
I'm leaning toward walk. Plus the bike is in a really sketchy neighborhood.

Except for the seat it looks like a teenager's basher. I'd pass.

If you do decide to buy it, then get the wheels trued up by a decent wheel person from the get go. Otherwise fix the other stuff as it breaks or wears out. Not knowing what the BB is or seeing the video, I"m not too concerned about the play side to side. Most BB's are inexpensive. Many shops don't charge much to change them.
Not sure what this bike is going to do for you or fix for you that the others won't. I'd want multiple speeds cycling the hills around your neck of the woods.

I've looked at several bikes and they all had issues. There's a carbon fiber hybrid I was going to check out tomorrow. It's $750 though.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there doesn't seem to be much overlap between the belt drive single speed and a hybrid.

concur
bike looks rode hard and put away wet.....grips all torn up are (to me) a general indicator of no maintenance.

LOL. They should GIVE you $1200 to take that stolen TRASH.
The front wheel has been CRASHED.
It wasn't $800 NEW.
That's the worst scam I've ever seen. And they have the nerve to put 30 yo rotted tires on it??
That Pinion bike is like brand new for $900. The seat is easily 2 inches higher than it should be.

No money to be made on that one, even if you lowballed them 10 cents on the dollar. Next....

Haters, it’s $150. Does the “dry rotted” tire hold air? $150 for a bike that rides is imo a fine deal, you have to get lucky to get a good bike at that price point.
i think that belt drive thing is sweet and would buy it just for that. Edit: maybe I’m confused about the price, I wouldn’t pay more than ~300 for that thing

it looks like a hard pass from me. That is not the District Carbon which was a carbon frame belt driven bike which was kind of a cool bike and is desirable. Ultralight it is not probably not super heavy but nothing really light aside from the belt.
Schindelhauer Bikes makes alll belt driven stuff including some single speeds which by all accounts are quite nice. Priority sells some belt drive single speeds. Both of those options would be way better than a damaged and abused Trek for a ridiculous amount of money (they want new prices for a hunk of piece).
The nicest thing on the Trek is the Belt and that is the cheaper CDN belt not the CDX belt and it has a crappy plastic belt ring which are not good for much of anything.

Thanks for all of the good points. Every time I post I learn something new. I wonder how the above poster knew the front wheel had been crashed,?
FWIW I'm driving down now to look at a Raleigh Cadent 2 for $165. It's a lower end hybrid but that is what I think would be best for now.

I can't tell what components come with the bike as over the years they have changed. May even be Claris but I will see.

I think it's a 2014 that came with Acera. Looks OK and not used much.
Give the wheels a good spin to check the lube. If it needs a BB, get a FSA 7420. Far better than cheapo shimano.

If it just needs a crank arm and tires, it would be worth it still. (assuming a single speed would get enough use to justify a spot in your fleet)
I think I'd ask the seller if you could take it to a bike shop to have them assess what all it needs.
Looking at the pix, it looks to have led a tough life in the city; I'd probably pass, even though it MAY be a bargain, as it could easily turn into a dreaded "project" or "money pit".
