Chain on Display Bike?
In my display collection, bikes that are not ridden, I do not have chains on them. Since the original chains are long gone and unlikely to be found again, I display them without. Figure I may as well put chains on the bikes that are regularly used instead of having them sit on unused machines. Anyone else here do this?

Nor do I but if you want some original chain from the mid 70's for true 10 speed bikes, I have a roll of unused chain that I might part with by chain length need.

Nope, I can take any of my bikes down from their spot(s) on the wall, pressurize the tires and away I go. Of course, I only have eight bikes left in my dramatically diminished vintage bicycle collection. But, it is Saturday and I am off to the city to see what old bikes work their way out of the wood work this week. Last weeks find...

I display my bikes to riders of carbon bikes. My preference is for them to get a good long look at the lugwork and componentry as I gradually pass them. For that, a functioning chain is needed.

New modern chains are cheap and shift like butter on C&V freewheels. They also look great when new. All my bikes are ready to ride, but I’d have new chains on them anyway. My favorite chain: Campy C-9.

Same here. Although in my case they generally pass me. (And none too gradually either )

One thing I've always respected about Jay Leno's incredible car collection is that they all run. That's my roundabout way of saying that in my opinion, even a display bike should have a chain.

The bikes would look incomplete without a chain. I do not have a collection of display bikes but if I did, they would be displayed as if they were going to be ridden.
I can only dream of having a collection of bikes.

Brought home a mess of SRAM chains yesterday and now have chains on all display bikes. Yes, I'm still boug (slang for bourgeois) although not a foody or alcohol boug. These bikes have been well ridden by me in the past and put in retirement several years ago. I am the original owner of all bikes on display. I do have the 85 Miyata 1000 in use as a long distance commuter and photo bike. Easily carries an SLR in the trunk pack.

I'd rather have a couple three display bikes than hoarding over a dozen or two.

Only have 1 bike hanging on my wall. I simply cleaned all the parts it came with including the chain.
In the future I may disassemble the entire bike down to the bare frame and polish/wax everything.
Regardless, it will still be rideable no matter what...

I'd put a chain on it - you never know when you'll need to escape a hoard of flesh-hungry zombies.
