What the... Heck is this bolt for?
I'm guessing it was a factory mount for a headlamp/generator? Can anyone enlighten me (pardon the pun)? Thanks in advance!

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Light / reflector mount for a British model Raleigh... they ride on the other side of the road so the integrated mount is on the opposite side.
Would love to see the whole bike it if is yours to show off.

There is only the one bolt on the right side- I wondered if it was for a single pannier but then thought a light?light?

Thanks, I purchased it yesterday for $100. Has Campy shifters and derailleurs, curious about the tubing if anyone knows. Will post more pictures. Thanks again.

It is a fitting for a front light. If you look at my Flying Scot thread you can see a photo with the correct bracket attached. (Third photo)
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ys-Flying-Scot
You used to be able to get big battery lights which slid over the bracket.

It's the mount for a lamp bracket, nothing more, very common on British Bicycles. Some older models will have a slotted braze on on the right Chainstay for the generator. On the shelf above are some British made battery lights that can mount to the bracket
You can see the same here on this Maclean and if you look below the rear brake you see the slot for the generator
This Raleigh has a clamp on bracket with the lamp installed in the same position
bracket looks like this

Nice bike! Specifications etc here.
The high tensile steel frame tubing, however, is nothing special. Around 1962 Raleigh stopped building anything with 531 tubing at the Nottingham plant. When they started offering 531 bikes again, several years later, they were made at the Carlton plant at Worksop.

Yes! I have always liked the English (and Nishiki/Kawamura-copied) wrap-around seatstay, and of course I am a sucker for a contrasting color head tube which shows off the lugwork.

Looks like a 62 Gran Sport ...does it have the original Dunlop special lightweight stainless rims with Racelite hubs? They're easily worth more than the cost of the bike. It looks pretty original and is a fine example of Raleighs better bike of the early to mid 60's. Sheldon has a page on it. https://sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/gran-sport.html (oops, RHM beat me to it.)

There were definitely some bikes/forks made with bolt-holes on both sides, for a shorty pannier, because I just saw one on my local CL recently. I'm guessing it's that high on the fork legs, to make the steering less jittery, compared to the lower-mounted front racks. I think the Trek touring bikes used them too, didn't they? So yes, you need to look closely, at each bike, to determine if those holes are for lights or racks. Or maybe both, with a long enough bolt.

A little DIY work with a cup holder and a beer bottle and you have a dandy bottle rocket launcher.

The lamp boss has a knurled edge so it holds the bracket tight when the bolt is done up.
I think the Raleigh Chopper had this type of lamp boss.
