Interbike 2018 Observations

Just came from Interbike 2018 show in Nevada. Looks like most of the development going on in the folder segment is the addition of motors. Same with all bike types; mountain, hybrids, cargo, etc. Got my first taste on a few models; a Tern Vektron P9 and a Oyama E8D. Power assist is smoother with the more expensive Tern(5 power delivery options). Even at the lowest setting(of 3) on the Oyama; the motor’s kick is a bit more abrupt. There were lots more offerings from various Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturers; but didn’t have any more time to try out. South Korean Chedech, also showed a motor attached to their carbon fiber model. Some of Dahon’s future models will come with a Deltec cable. It’s some sort of bracing to reinforce the frame and accommodate more weight.

So that’s my short overview. Sorry didn’t take a lot of pics. My hands were full; holding my bag, making notes, getting brochures, etc.

Ps. met Thor for the first time. I don't know; I was expecting a strict and rigid school principal type.
But Thor was actually a really nice and funny guy.

Was anyone saying anything about the effect of the tariffs on their products?

Is the Tern P9 the one with the Bafang Max drive. I really look forward to it. It's quite a bit cheaper than the Bosch version.

I didn't hear too many concerns about tariffs. Either anecdotally, talking to some vendors. Or industry wide.
Most of the topics in discussion were general survival strategy for bike shops. Making money on bike fittings,
engaging other groups that may have been overlooked by industry(African american, women, LGBTQ, etc.),
continuing education/training(ebikes, eshifting, etc.), etc.

Yes, and it was really slick and even for a 1st time user like me - user friendly.

Well, I'm glad to hear it isn't going to be a huge problem for manufacturers. Be interesting to see how much gets passed on to the consumer.
