lips on my hub's nuts?
I was putting a new set of wheels on my vintage Raleigh fixed conversion, and the front hub wasn't seating correctly. Upon closer inspection, I realized the two locknuts (holding the cones in place) had tiny 'lips' protruding outwards--each about 1/2mm. They were interfering with the fork seating on the axle properly, so I ended up turning them around; but since the 'lips' are so thin, I'm concerned they'll slowly grind down. Anyone know why the nuts would have such little bits?
Also, I had to remove the washers from either sides of the cones. Will it affect the hub/cones if leave them off?

How are they going to grind down? They aren't rotating after you've done up the outer axle nuts, are they? And no, the missing washers won't hurt as long as the locknuts are done up to an appropriate torque against the cones. But if this was a simple rebuild with original parts, why did you remove them?
FWIW, I think the lips are supposed to go on the outside so the flat part of that nut lines up against the cone and increases the surface contact.
Edit: Just reread your post about the new wheels. I'd go back to having the lips on the outside to ensure the cones don't undo or tighten up.

It's possible I didn't describe it correctly. I've re-done a bunch of hubs, but never seen these kinds of nuts...
Here's a diagram in profile:
cone................nut..................fork.
___ ........... __...............| /.
/ |...............| |................| |
| |...............| |................| |
| |--- axle----| |axle..---ax| |---axle
\ |...............| |_..............|_|.
\ |...............|___|...<-------------*****
*****this is the little 'lip' I'm referring to. It's about 1/2 mm 'tall' and protrudes 1/2 mm wide out from the nut.
(edit: sorry, best I could do with the diagram.)
Anyway, I rode it around and it works fine the way it is. Maybe I'll just get a pair of nuts that are flat-sided.
