Bone conduction is a superior solution, but for more money.

If this is what you are referring to, I have this Monster one I picked up off of Amazon when the price dropped (paid $45):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It actually sounds good and I use it all over the place (gardening, working around the house, etc.) where I still want some ambient sound coming in and not having something stuck in my ears. On the bike it's good too but you have to make sure to adjust it a bit depending on your riding position. If you're leaning over a lot it will sort of hang and be awkward unless you bend it tighter around your neck or stuff it some under your shirt. I'd say get one if you can get a good deal. You may still find a few uses for it if the biking thing doesn't work out as planned.

Yup, I have the Monster Boomerang, the same one that @MrWasabi has. I love it. This sounds crazy, but when I get up in the morning on the way to the bathroom, I put it on, and I don't take it off until I go to bed. I'm losing my hearing so it helps me a lot with talking on the phone. It's also excellent for conference calls, i.e. two people can hear and talk at once. I put it on the table when my spouse and I want to talk to someone.
For on the bike, it's excellent. It's probably safer than having the radio on in the car with the windows closed. I do hear all the ambient sounds, and I hear the audio just fine until wind noise reaches a certain level from speed. I can reach and pause the audio for those times.
It's tough, too. It doesn't fall off my collar bone often, and when it does, it survives. It's also water resistant, and I take it in the shower with me. I hang it up above me and don't wear it in the shower.
