Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'll double the "correct". But with the caveat, use what ever gets one motivated. Some can compete with themselves, others driven better by trying to match/exceed others.

Don't they have hills where you live? Natural intervals. Kill it on the way up, recover on the way down.

When I used to do intervals on a tread mill I would typically jog for 3 mins run hard for a min. I would change those times based on heart rate info that the machine provided.

I would assume it’s similiar on a bike, but I would be judging my heart rate by feel alone. And I have no way of judging going “hard”. Again this would be by feel. I could try to use speed but there are a lot of variables into play.

Goal wise, since I brought that up. Always want to go faster but that goes without saying. Long term goal, I would like to average between 750 to 1000 a month this time next year. I don’t know if that is sustainable but I can do over 500 now relatively easily, I would imagine my fitness and endurance will continue to grow.
As others have said, you can do intervals by heart rate or perceived effort, but typically longer ones work better as there is to much lag in heart rate for short intervals to be measured by heart rate. And then perceived effort has a ton of other factors as well such as wind / tiredness, etc. It's actually easier to do intervals like this indoors as you have control over the effort and environment.
But first figure out what it is you want to improve. That will help determine the type of intervals to do. There's a lot out there on interval training.

Slow week.

Personally, I was rained out Mon and today, so that's 36 miles down right there, and was doing family stuff on Wed, so it was only ~40 instead of the usual 60+.

Hey, if I ride in on the SRT it's ok when paved, but I don't like it when it turns to gravel, so the map suggests I continue on Umbria St. Is that reasonable or is there a better way?

You don't want to ride the canal path when it's wet. When dry, it's actually rideable on road tires. At the end up the paved section you need to go under the bridge, up the hill and then make the (first) hairpin turn to the right if you wan to continue to Roxborough on road.

Yup, the issue is the ONLY time I am heading in that way is when it's wet, so I really don't like the wet gravel. I will give it a try tomorrow, probably, unless the weather is truly awful. Someone's gotta challenge Bah Humbug for the top spot.

Being discussed. I want AG to take initiative so that she feels ownership and it's not another "my animal", but she's quite busy.

We're now also discussing a trip back home for October-ish.

Got a pleasant surprise this morning in the form of a follow request from my brother on Strava

He'll be moving up here in October, unfortunately at the very tail end of the outdoor riding season, but I'm super excited at the possibility of riding with him.
